LATCH FOR APPLIOATIO T. P. WA

UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS P. WALSH, OF GRAYSLAKE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WAGNER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CEDAR FALLS, IOWA.
LATCH FOR DOORS OR GATES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
Application filed March 26,1907. erial No. 364,693.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. WALSH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grayslake, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Latches for Doors or Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to latches for doors or gates, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a latch of simple construction which can be operated from either side of the door or gate.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door latch which can be operated from either side of the door and which can be locked against operation from the outer side of the door.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a combined latch and handle which can be quickly attached to the door and door frame, and which will be composed almost entirely of metal straps and which will be simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a latch made in accordance with my invention and shown from the outer side of the door, the door and the frame being broken away. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, portions of the latch and handles being shown in plan. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the lock and keeper. Fig. 4 is a detail section showing the catch for holding the door or gate open.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1, in Figs. 1 and 2, designates the door, and 2 is the door frame. Secured to the opposite sides of the door are the latch members 3, 4. The latch member 3 comprises an arm 5, a handle portion 6 and a latch member 7 provided with an angularly bent shank 8 having a latch head 9 formed thereon, said latch head having a curved or semicircular outer edge 10 and oppositely disposed shoulders 11. The latch member 4 consists of an arm 5', a handle member 6, and afoot 7 The members 3 and 4 are secured to the door by means of a pivot bolt 12 which passes through the members 4 and 5, through the door 2, and through an anti-friction sleeve 13, said bolt 12 being provided with a nut 14 for securing the members together upon opposite sides of the door. A bolt 12 extends through the arm 7 and the foot 7 of the two members 3 and 4, and said bolt 12 is provided with an anti-friction sleeve 13, a nut l4 engaging the bolt to hold the two members in place upon opposite sides of the door. The sleeve 13 is mounted in a curved slot 15 to permit the latch members to swing upon the pivotal bolt 12. A, suitable keeper 16 secured to the door 1 passes across the arm 7 to limit the action of the same. In the door frame 2 a mortise 17 is provided and secured in said mortise is a combined lock and latch keeper 18, said latch keeper being provided with a curved inwardly extending catch tongue 19 adapted to engage one of the shoulders 11 of the latch head, and to permit the curved portion 10 of said latch head to ride over the same when the door is swung to. The other shoulder 11 of the latch head is engaged by the bolt member 20 of the lock 18.
As shown in Fig. 4, a catch 21. is secured to the side of a building or a fence 22 to engage the handle member 6 of the latch to hold the door or gate open.-
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a door or gate latch made in accordance with my invention may be readily operated from either side of the door or gate, that the latch is of simple construction, can be easily connected to a door, can be manufactured at slight cost, and will be found very efiicient and reliable in use.
Having thus described the invention, what I (3121111118 1. A latch comprising a'handle portion, a latch head extending inwardly from the end thereof, said latch head having a curved outer edge and oppositely disposed shoulders, in combination with a keeper having a curved inwardly extending catch member.
2. A latch comprising a member having a handle thereon, an inwardly extending latch head, a curved catch for said latch head, and a handle member secured to the opposite side of the door or gate, said two handle members be ing' pivoted upon a bolt extending through the door or gate and connected together by a bolt which passes through a curved slot in the door or gate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS P. YVALSI'I.
Witnesses R. W. CHURCHILL, GEORGE THOMSON.
