NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST GOERTZ, OF NEVARK, NEW JERSEY.
BAG-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,664, dated December 2. 1884-.
Application filed June 13, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aueusr GOERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to simplify and facilitate the process of opening a bag or satchel; and it consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures, Figure l is a side elevation of a bag or satchel frame embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken through line X; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
In said drawings, a represents the bagframe, b the handle pivoted thereon, and c the lock thereto attached, said lock, handle, and frame being of any ordinary construction. Upon said handle, or forming a part thereof, at or near the pivotal extremity, is formed or arranged a projecting cam or lug, d, and to the bolt or latch e of the lock is connected a bar or sliding shaft, f, which extends to a po sition to engage the said lug. The lock-case g is extended, as shown, to providea suitable bearing for the shaft. By turning the handle down the said cam engages the end of the shaft, forcing the same toward the center of 0 the frame, thus causing the latch moving with the saidshaft to pass from holding engagement with the hasps h. When the Weight of the hand is removed from the handle, the spring m, arranged between the bolt and the lockcase, causes the said bolt to react. A fingerpiece, a, may be provided to hold one of the sections while the other is being drawn from it by the handle.
Changes may be made in the construction shown without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as new is The combination of a bag-frame, having a lock or catch to hold the sections thereof together, and a handle the extremities of which are pivoted upon said frame, said handle being provided with a cam, d, said cam engaging with the lock or catch to unfasten the sec tions when said handle is n10 qed pivotally, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of May, 1884.
AUGUST eonerz.
