PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIN-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,619, dated November 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI F. OAHN, of the city,
county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chain-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a face view of myimproved chain-lock. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is an edge view on the enlarged scale of the same.
- Similar letters of reference indicate correspond ing parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in the little ornamental padlocks which are applied to watch-chains for securing the ends of the same to the garments. The object of the present invention is so to construct and arrange said lock that it cannot be easily opened and removed by thieves, but quite conveniently by its owner. The
invention consists in applying the knob above the pivot of the bolt. This will necessitate the pulling of the knob for opening the lock, while heretofore it was made to be pushed.
A in the drawing represents the case of the lock, made in the form of a padlock. B is the hasp. C the pivoted bolt, looking with the end of the hasp. a is the spring bearing against the bolt, driving it against thehasp. The bolt is, by a pin, b, pivoted to the case. Above the line of the pivots is secured to the bolt a projecting pin, (1, which extends through a slot in the side of the case A. By pulling on this pin, d, which has a head to facilitate the taking hold of it, the boltis withdrawn from the hasps andthe latter canbe opened.
It will be seen that it is much more difficult for a thief to unlock this fastener than those which are opened by gentle pressure against a knob or pin; while for the owner it is equally convenient. The face-plate e of the lock is secured by a screw, f, by removing which the interior will be exposed, and easily repaired if out of order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The pivotedlbolt 0 arranged in the case A, and provided with a projection, d, which is above the line of the pivot, to open the lock by pulling on it, substantially as herein shown and described.
