Description
B. PRUDEN. Door-Check.
No. 226,786. f Patented April 20,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY B. PRUDEN, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,786, dated April 20, 1880.
Application filed January 23, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY B. PRUDEN, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in automatic catches or latches for gates or doors, which are designed to hold them open and prevent them from being accidentally closed or blown to by the wind.
The device consists in a reversible slotted catch, which is pivoted to a retaining and guide plate, so that when the door or gate is opened its lower corner is caught and held firmly in the slot orrecess of the catch until intentionally released; and the novelty consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be herewith set forth and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open door, showing the application of my improved automatic catch. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the catch and its plate. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the catch.
The catch con sists of a metal piece, B, of the shape shown, having a recess or slot in one side as wide as the thickness of the door, and with right-angular interior sides or shoulders I) c, as shown particularlyin Fig. 2. The nose or striking portion of this catch is inclined, as seen at d, and the catch is pivoted, by a screw or bolt,f, at one end, to the flat plate (1, which is fastened to the floor at the point where itis desired to hold the door. The end or edge of the plate C under the nose of the catch is slotted or recessed, as seen at g, and thelower one of the two studs or pins a projecting from the nose of the catch travels in and is confined by this recess, so that the swinging motion of the catch is limited to the length of this recess. By thus placing the pins a upon both the upper and lower sides of the nose the catch is made reversible, and will fit right or left hand opening doors or gates.
NVhen the door is thrown open its lower corner strikes the nose of the latch and moves it sufficiently to pass by. It then comes in contact with the shoulders c, and, pressing against are old but,
Having thus fully described my invention, I'claim- The herein-described catch B,-recessed upon one side to form shoulders b c, and having pins a projecting from both upper and lower sides, in combination with the metal plate 0, provided with the slot g, adapted to receive the lower pin, a, when said catch is pivoted and rests upon said plate, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
'Witness my hand this 3d day of January, 1880.
HENRY BAER PRUDEN.
