NITED STATES IIJ'JIAM H. JORDAN, OFLEXINGTON, MISSISSIPPL ervn-LliToi-i.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,225, dated August 5, 1884. Application ined April 15, 1834. (No meer) To all whom t may con/cern,.-
Be itkncwn that l, WILLIAM H. JORDAN, a citizen of vthe United States, and a resident of LcXingtoin-in the county of Holmes and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches; and I do hereby declare that the" following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which 4will enable others skilled in the art to whiclrit appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a gate and its latclrpost provided with iny `improved latch. Fig. 2 is a side View of that part of the gate which engages the latch. Fig. 3 is a perspective .View showing the latch open. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the latch closed.` Fig. 5 is a plan ofthe latclrblank, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional 'view through line .t .t in Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spending parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to latches adapt ed for use upon farm-gates, and Vfor similar purposes, and has for its object to construct a latch which, while being absolutely proof against stock, can at the saine time be easily manipulated, and is not liable to get out of order.
To this end my invention consists in the detailed construction of the gate-latch, as herein'- after more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes the gate, and B the latch-post of the saine. The gate has a recess, C, adapted tovcngage the latch. -The latter consists of a'ilat piece of any suitable metal, which is eut into the shape shown in Fig. 5, having a square notch or recess, D, and rounded corners E E. The
widest part F of the blank is rolled up to forni a sleeve or hinge, F", in conjunction with the horizontal hingebolt or pintle G and the sleeve H ofthe fixed plate I, by means of which the latch is fastened upon the latclrpost by means of screws or nails inserted through appropriate holes in the plate l. The latch-post Bis recessed transversely at b to receive the hinge, and is also recessed both above and below the transverse hinge, as shown at Z, to make rooni for plaie l and the latch, when the saine is in its vertical or closed position. lf desired, a spring nia-y be suitably arranged to operate in conjunction with the latch, so as 'to force this down into its horizontal or closed position; or thelatch may be closed by its own gravity only. lWhen the latch is in its horizontal or closed position, its notched part will rest upon the straight bottoni o of the recess G, with the wings l d projecting on opposite sides ol" the gaie, thus holding the gate lirnil y in its closed position. The latch may be opened from either side of the gate by handles K, which are suitably fastened upon the outer ends of the sleeve F.
Having thus described in y in vention, I cl ai 1n and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the latclrpost B, having recesses L and b, plate l, having sleeve H, horizontal hinge-bolt G, notched latch-plate D, having rounded corners E, wings d, trans verse sleeve and handles K, fastened upon the outer ends of said sleeve, and gate A, having the recess G, adapted to engage the notched end of the latch-plate when the saine is in a horizontal position. substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
ln testimony that l claim the foregoing as nly own l have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
l-VlLLlAM l-l. JORDAN. iVitnesses:
