Description

F. P. GEYER.
SHUTTER 0R DOOR FASTENER.
(No Model.)
Patented Mar. '10, 1896.-
UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
FRANK P. GEYER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHUTTER OR DOOR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,141, dated March 10, 1896.
Application filed May 13, 1895. Serial No. 549,086. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. GEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
- My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shutter and door fasteners, the object being to provide a cheap, simple and secure device for this purpose which cannot be opened from without and which is easily applied to window-shutters and doors already in place.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing it attached to two closed window-shutters or doors.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent two window-shutters, doors, or the like. To the shutter A is secured, by screws or otherwise, a flat metal plate D, provided with one or more notches 6, extending from the upper edge of the plate to the middle thereof. A similar plate D, preferably shorter than the plate D, is secured by screws to the shutter A, and it has a notch 6 similar to the notches e in the plate D. The bolts 0 C have each a head a, a reduced portion or neck (1, and an opening d passing transversely through the body of the bolt near the neck. The distance between the head of the bolt and the neck (1 is equal to the thickness of the shutter or door, for a purpose to be described hereinafter. The bolts 0 0 pass through the shutter from the outside, and also through the notches in the plates D D.
In assembling the parts the bolts are driven from the outside through holes bored in the shutters at suitable distances from the meeting edges, care being taken to keep the open ings d in the bolts in ahorizontal plane. The plates D D are then put in place by engaging the necks d of the bolts (which necks we tend just within the inner face of the shutter) with the notches e e of the plates. The plates are then slipped upward until they are in the position shown in Fig. 1, after which they are fastened to the shutters by screws. The necks d of the bolts thus entering the notches e c of the plates secure the bolts firmly in place and prevent them from being withdrawn.
A locking bar or rod G for fastening the shutters is provided at one end with a head g, while at the opposite end is a hole 9, in which a key or securing-pin g is placed. A stop d on the plate D limits the backward movement of the bolt G.
The fastening device being secured in place on the window-shutters, as above described, and the shutters closed, it is only necessary to move the locking-bolt G across the adjoining edges of the two shutters and through the opening d in the bolt 0, thus firmly and securely fastening them against outside manipulation. The key or pin 9 is inserted in the hole g to prevent any accidental movement of the bar Gr.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. lhe combination, in a fastening device for shutters, and the like, of headed bolts provided with openings, said bolts passing through the parts to be secured, plates attached to said parts, a bar or rod adapted to pass through the openings in the bolts, and a securing-pin, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a fastening device for sh utters, and the like,of headedbolts passing through the parts to be secured, said bolts being provided with reduced portions, plates attached to said parts and engaging the necks of the said bolts, a locking-bar, and a securing-pin,substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK P. GEYER. Witnesses:
EDWARD J. FRosr, CHAS. O. COLLIER.
