IMPROVMENT IN BOLTS FOR DOORS AND GATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,131, dated December 2, 1873; application l'ed November 1, 1873.

Be it knoivn that I, Josrkn SMITH, of Southold, in the county of Suolk and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door and Gate Fasteners, of which the following is a specification:

, My invention has for its object to furnish an improved fastening for doors, gates, &c., which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, nea-t, strong, and du The invention consists in the inner plate, cast with a closed keeper, a slotted keeper, and a slot; the bolt B,

cast With aloop or handle and a hole; the outer plate, cast With a ilange, a loop, and a slot; and the loop-handle, constructed andarranged, in connection with each other, as here f inafter fully described.

v A is the inner plate ofthe fastening, which is cast with two keepers, ai* a2, to receive the bolt B. The bolt B has a loop, b', cast upon it, to serve as a handle for opera-ting it gate. The rear keeper a2 is cast with a transverse slot through its middle part, to allow the handle b to pass through when slipping the bolt into place. C is the outer plate, which'is lcast with a flange, c1, to overlap the edge of the door,

as shown in Fig. l. D is a loop or handle, the stem ot' which passes through a slot, c, in the outer plate O, a slot in the door, and a slot, a3, in the inner plate A, and enters a hole in the bolt B, Where it is secured in place by a pin or other suitable fastening, so that the bolt B may be moved back andforth from the outer side of the door or gate. Upon the outer plate C, at or near the forward end of the slot c3 in said plate, is cast a loop, c2, which is made exactly like the handle D in size and form. The loop c2 serves as a guard to prevent the bolt from being pushed back by cattle rubbing against the handle D, or by other accidental means.

rIhe fastener is looked by passing the link or loop of a padlock through the handle D `or loop c3.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The inner plate A, cast with a closed keeper, al, a slotted keeper, a2, and a slot, a3; the bolt B, cast with a loop or handle, b', and a hole; the outer plate C, cast With a ila-nge, o1, a loop, c2, and a slot, c3, and the handle D, constructed and arranged, in connection With each other, substantially as herein. shown and described.
