UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BANNAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SHUTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 591,723, dated October 12, 1897.
Application filed July 21, 1897. Serial No. 645,411. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BANNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in shutter-fasteners and its object is to provide a novel, simple, and effective fastener which may be employed to engage a catch on the sill and wall, so as to hold the shutter in either opened or closed position; and to this end it consists in the novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings,'illustrating the invention, Figure l is an exterior elevational view of a shutter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through a window frame and shutter, show-' ing my invention in use. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener detached. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 5 a detail perspective View showing the two sections of the sleeve separated.
Referring now more. particularly to the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the window-frame, 2 the sill thereof, and 3 a shutter or blind hinged to open eXteriorly, as usual.
The fastener 4 is provided at each end with a locking-head 5 6, having oppositely-dis posed locking-slots 5 6 to engage, respectively, with catches or keeper-plates 7 7 on the sill and exterior wall of the building. The interior locking-head 5 is formed with oppositely-projecting bosses 5 to enable it to be grasped by the fingers of the hand and operated.
The shank or body portion 8 of the fastener extends through an eXteriorly-threaded sleeve 9, which is fitted into a threaded orifice 10 in the shutter. This sleeve is con- The inner end of the sleeve is formed with an integral bell-mouth collar 18, having a curved outwardly-projecting slotted lip 14, which overhangs the locking-head 5 and serves as a stop to limit the upward movement of the In this slot operates a curved pawl or latch 15, pivoted by a pin 16. The end 17 of thislatch is adapted to engage a shoulder 18 on the fastener and hold the same locked, and its other end is provided with a button or thumb-piece 19.
In operation it will be understood that when the shutter is closed the locking-head 5 of the fastener is engaged with the catch or keeperplate 7 and the pivoted pawl or catch 15 is turned down to hold it locked in such position. When the shutter is opened, the fastener is tilted on its pivot to bring the locking-head 6 into position to engage with the catch or keeper-plate 7 on the wall of the building and may also be retained against accidental disengagement in locked position by the pawl or catch. 7
By this construction it will be seen that I have provided a sash or blind fastener which combines the desirable advantages of simplicity in construction, durability and efiectiveness in operation, and withal may be manufactured at small cost.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
A shutter or blind fastener, comprising a threaded sleeve provided atone end with an integral collar having a projecting slotted stop-lip, said sleeve being formed of two semicylindrical sections provided with inwardlyprojecting lugs, a transverse pin or bolt extending through said lugs and sides of the sections and uniting the same, a fastener consisting of a shank pivoted to said bolt and provided at each end with a locking-head, and a pawl or latch pivoted to and operating in the slot of .said locking-lip and adapted to engage the inner head of the fastener to hold it locked, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BANNAN.
