SASH-LOC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 730,266, dated June 9, 1903.
hpplication filed January 26 I903. Serial No. 140,535. (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known thatI, FREDERICK J. HOYT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure v1 shows my said new sash-lock in longitudinal vertical 'sectionand edge View applied to the meeting-rails of a pair of sashframes in locked position. Fig. 2 shows the top or moving member of my said device in top or plan view as seen on the outer face, the attached parts of the opposite face being shown in broken lines. Fig. 3 shows the boltkeeper in side elevation. Fig. 4 shows the bolt-keeper in end elevation.
Like reference-letters denote like parts always. The object of my invention is to produce a sash-lock which looks the locking member of my device to its position, is readily and easily applied and locked and unlocked, and is cheap and durable.
To attain said desirable ends, I construct my said new sash-lock in substantially the following manner, namely: I make a low broad fiat oblong box a, with a bottom and four sides, wherein ahinge c is formed in what forms the lower end wall of said box, on which turns the top or lid 1) of said box. Said box is let into the upper sash until the face of its lid is flush with the face of the sash and in such a position therein that when said lid is opened its face lies on the top of the lower sash, as shown in Fig. 1. The said lid is also shown in its closed position on the box in said figure in broken outlines, together with its attachments. On the inner face of said lid is a stop 9 for the bolt 6, which reciprocates on said inner face. Said inner'faoe is the top face of said lid when it is down or looked, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and said bolt e slides within a keeper f, held by screws 70 to said lid-face, and immediately beyond said keeper is a hole 01 through said lid, which has a beveled edge at, and through said opening passes a keeper j, whereof its outer face j is beveled to correspond with the beveled edge (1', and said keeper is' secured to the top of the lower sash by screws Z, and 7 into said keeperj is shot the bolt 6 until its handle or stop 6' strikes the outer edge of the keeperf i and its pointpasses beyond the lower or inner edge of the opening cl, and in said latter condition of said lid and bolt the upper and lower sash are securely locked together and cannot be changed or unlocked by any instrument capable of being passed between the meeting-rails of a pair of sash. At the outer end of said lid 1) is a lug or catchh, around which the wood is cut away to form a cavity per and lower sash-frames longitudinally to their home. The said box Ct forms a bar-holder, on which the locking-bar b turns and within which the mechanism to the lid is attached. It is not, however, essential to have a metal box, because the required room may be dug out of the wood of the sash; but the hinge c mnstbe held to its place, as shown.
What I claim is 1. The combin ation with a hinged bar, having a hole through it, and provided on its inner face with a reciprocable bolt, and keeper and stops for said bolt, and a four-sided receptacle in the upper sash for said bolt, boltkeeper, and stops, of a keeper to engage said bar, through said opening, and to receive said bolt, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a hinged bar, having a hole through it, and provided on its inner face with a receiprocable bolt, and keeper and stops for said bolt, and a four-sided receptacle in the upper sash-for said bolt, boltkeeper, and stops, of akeeper provided with a beveled face, to" engage saidbarjthrough FREDERICK J. HOYT.
