UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB P. IMIG, OF SAN JOSE, ILLINOIS.
DOORFLATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
Application filed September 28, 1909, Serial No. 520,030. Renewed June 23, 1911. Serial No. 635,021.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB P. Iivrrc, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Mason and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to provide a latch intended for doors, but which may be used for fastening gates or other similar closing means, the purpose being the provision of a latch which may be operated from either side of the door, gate or other like closure, the latch and the operating means being so constructed and mounted as to prevent the formation of an opening through the door which would admit of observation or necessitate special closing means to prevent any one looking through the door.
The invention contemplates a latch, a novel form of catch cooperating therewith and latch operating means embodying a spindle and crank arm, the latter being a part of the spindle and the latter in turn forming supporting means for the latch, the parts being combined and arranged as disclosed more particularly hereinafter and claimed.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a door latch embodying the invention, showing the same applied. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line XX of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the catch. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of an end portion of the spindle.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates a door, gate or like closure adapted to receive the latch and 2 indicates the jamb against which the door 1 closes and which is provided with a catch 3 for receiving the projecting end of the latch 4.
A spindle 5 is provided and mounted in an opening of the door or closure 1, the opening being reinforced by means of a sleeve or bushing 6 secured therein in any manner. One end of the spindle 5 is reduced and the outer portion of the reduced end is threaded, as indicated at 7, and the inner portion is made angular, as at 8, a shoulder being formed at the base of the reduced portion of the spindle to limit the inward movement of the latch 4. The opposite end of the spindle 5 is provided with an operating crank 8 having a knob 9 or other convenient grip applied to or formed with the crank portion. The spindle 5 and crank arm 8 are of integral formation consisting of parts of a rod or bar bent upon itself.
The latch 4 consists of a bar having an eye at one end of square or angular form to receive the angular part 8 of the spindle 5 so as to interlock therewith and cause both the spindle and latch to move in unison as one part. A nut 10 is fitted upon the threaded end 7 of the spindle to hold the latch 4 in place. A knob 11 is secured to the latch at an intermediate point for convenience of operation. A keeper 12 secured to the door or closure 1 limits the movements of the latch 4. The outer end of the latch 4 projects beyond the edge of the door or closure so as to engage the catch 3 and hold the door closed.
The catch 3 consists of a plate which is let into the jamb 2 and formed with an L-opening 13. The lower side of the horizontal portion of the L-opening 13 is inclined, as indicated at 14, for the projecting end of the latch 4 to ride upon when closing the door. When the door is closed the latch 4 clears the inclined side 14 of the opening 13 and drops into the vertical portion of the opening 13, thereby securing the door. When it is required to open the door either one of the knobs 9 or 11 is grasped and lifted, thereby moving the outer end of the latch upward in the vertical portion of the opening 13 and when the latch registers with the horizontal portion 13 the door may be opened, as will be readily understood. When closing the door the projecting end of the latch rides upon the inclined wall 14 of the L-opening 13, thereby lifting the same preliminary to dropping of the latch to engage the vertical portion of the opening 13 after the latch has cleared the inclined wall 14.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made When desired as are Within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new, is
In combination a door having a trans verse opening, a metal sleeve secured in said opening and having its ends projecting slightly beyond the sides of the door, a spindle mounted in the bushing and having an integral crank at one end and having its opposite end portion reduced and consisting of an angular portion and a terminal threaded portion, a latch having an eye at one end of a form to receive the angular end portion of the spindle, a nut mounted upon the threaded end of the spindle to secure the latch thereon, a knob secured to the latch, and a keeper secured to the door and receiving the outer end of the latch to limit the movements of the latch, spindle and crank.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
