Be it known that 1, VILLIAM MANGIN, citizen of the Unit-ed States, residing at Raymond, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 1Vindow-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates tov certain new and useful improvements in the construction of window fasteners such as are adapted to be applied to the meeting rails of a pair of sashes to prevent opening of the window from the outside of the building by a burglar or unauthorized person.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this Character which is simple and ine-xpensive in its construction, which can be readily applied to any conventional form of window, which can be easily manipulated and quickly set in either an operative or an inoperative position7 and which will securely lock the window sashes togcther and hold them against relative sliding movement when in an operative position.
Tith these and other objects in view, the inventio-n consists in certain novel combinatio-ns and arrangement-s of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended olaim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and acoompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a window fastener const-ructed in acoordance with the invention, showing the same as applied to the meeting rails of a pair of sashes. Fig. 2 is a transverse seotio-nal view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlargecl plan view of one end of the base plate.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicatod in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the. numeral 1 designates the lower rail of an upper' sash A, and the numeral 2 the upper rail of a lower sash B, the two rails 1 and 2 being` disposed side by side and in contact with each other, as indicated by Figs. 2 and 3, when the window sashes are in a closed position.
A base plate 3 is applied to one of the meeting rails, being shown in the present instance as appliedV to the upper rail 2 of the lower sash B. This base plate is formed with the pendent side fianges 32L by means of which the body portion thereof is held in a rai'sed position above the rail 2, suitable fastening members such as the sorews a being provided for securing the base plate in position. A longitudinal slot 5 is formed in one end of the base plate 3, the said slot communicating at one extrelnity thereof with a laterally disposed curved slot 6.
A looking bolt 7 is slidably mounted upon the top of the base plate 3 and arranged to have both a longitudinally sliding and a laterally swinging movement. A pair of guide pins 8 project downwardly from the looking bolt 7 through the longitudinal guide slot 5 and terminate in heads 9 which operate in the clearanoe space between the base plate 3 and the top of the rail 2 and engage the lower face Of the base plate to prevent the guide pins S from pulling through the slot 5. The looking bolt 8 is thus held against the upper face of the base plate 3, although it can have a longitudinal sliding niovementthereon as the guide pins 8 move back and forth in the longitudinal slot 5.
One end of the looking bolt 7 is conneoted by a tension spring 10 to a suitable lug or projection 12 at the end of the base plate 3, while the opposite end of the locking bolt is formed with a laterally projecting returned or hooked end 7a which is aclapted to project over the lower rail 1 of the upper sash A. The nose of the hooked end 72L is adapted to enter a keeper 13 upon the upper sash, and the spring 10 normally tends to slide the looking bolt 7 in such a direction as to retain the hooked end yieldably within the said keeper.
A handle or finger piece 14 is applied to the hooked end 7 a of the looking bolt 7 and by grasping this handle and sliding the looking bolt 7 against the action of the spring 10 the hooked end of the looking bolt can be withdrawn from the keeper 13. Furthermore, when the guide pin 8 remote from the spring 10 reaches the end of the longitudinal slot 5, the said guide pin can be swung laterally into the curved slot 6, thereby swinging the looking bolt 7 about the other guide pin 8 as a center so as to move the hooked end 7a of the looking bolt laterally away from the keeper 13 and lower rail of the upper sash. A noteh or seat 15 is provided in one side of the Curved slot (5 and the guide pin 8 may be brought into engagenient With this seat to lock the bolt 7 in an inoperative position against the action of the spring` 10. TWhen the looking bolt is in this position the two window sashes are tree to slide independently of eath other and the Window nia-y be opened and closed in the nsual nianner independ ently of the sash fastener. However, When it is desii'ed to lock the Window, it is inerely necessary to bring both of the guide pins 8 into the longitndinal slot 5 so that the spring 10 can draw the hooked end 7a of the locking bolt into engageinent With the keeper 13 and retain it yieldingly in said position.
Having thus deseribed the inventionmfliat claim as new and desire to secure by Lettel's Patent., is:-
A sash fastener including a base plate adapted to be applied to one of the meeting rails of a pair of sashes and formed With a longitudinal slot and also With a laterally disposed branch slot eoinmunieathig there- With, a looking` bolt slidable upon the base plate, a pair of guide pins projeoting from the looking bolt and slidable Within the longitudinal slot, a keeper upon the opposite meeting rail of the sashes, the looking bolt being` orined with a hooked end adapted to enffage the kceper, and a spring` engaging the looking bolt to hold it in operative position, said looking bolt being adapted to be nioved longitudinally to Withdraw the hooked end thereof from the keeper and then swung laterally about one of the pivot pins as a center, the othei` pivot pin entering the laterally disposed branch slot of the base plate to retain the looking bolt in an inoperative position against the action ot the spring".
