RICHIE DE LAN, OF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED SASH L'OCK AND ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,209, dated September 6, 1904. Application filed October 24, 1903. $e1'ia1 No. 178,427. (No model.)
To (I/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHIE DE LAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined Sash Lock and Adjuster, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined sash locks and adjusters.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which will be thoroughly effective in holding sashes positively locked together or in partly-open position for purpose of'ventilation.
as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction .and combination of parts of a combined sash lock and adjuster, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention capable ,of carrying the same into practical operation, it being under stood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion, and .exact manner'of assemblage without departing from the spirit thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation, showing a portion of the windowsash with the device applied thereto. 7 Fig. 2 is a View in section, taken on the line 2 2, Fig. l, and looking in the direction of the arrow Fig. 3 is a view in plan. Fig. 4 is a perspective viewof one element of the device. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the lockinglatch. Fig. 6 is a similar view of thekeeper- The device comprises in part a keeper carried by the meeting-rail 10 and a latch carried by the meeting-rail'll. The keeper consists With the above and other objects in view,
of an undercut or shouldered lug 13, carried by an attaching-plate 12, having the usual openings to receive the attaching-screws. The latch consists of a bolt 19, having a hooked terminal '20 to engage the keeper, a dog 22, pivotally connected by a transverse pin 21 with the bolt, and an attaching-plate 14:, preferably semicircular in shape, having the usual openings to receive'the attaching-screws and provided centrally of its outer or curved edge with a pair of lugs 15 and 16 to be engaged by the dog to hold the bolt in engagement with the keeper and at one side of its rear edge with a stop-lug 17 to limit the lateral movement of the latch, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The latch is combined with the attaching-plate-14 through the medium of a pivotpin 18, having an enlarged head, beneath which fits the bifurcated end of a flat spring 24:, which is held assembled with the bolt by a rivet 23, the free end of the spring being disposed to bear upon the dog 22, and thus hold it against the plate 14. The lug 15, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, is approximately rectangular, inclined face, which will operate to guide the dog between the lugs when moved to the position shown in Fig. 3. When in this position, the spring 24 will positively prevent the dog from working from between the lugs and also shield the latch against being thrown from the outside of the window. To facili-' tate moving of the dog out of engagement with the lugs 15 and 16, the former is provided with a thumb-piece 22 as shown. Pivotally connected with the keeper at 26 isan adjusting bar 27, provided on oneedge with a series of notches'or recesses 28 to be engaged by the bolt when the sashes are to be separated for'purpose of ventilation. This adjusting-bar is provided on one side with a cut-away portion 30 to permit it to be folded down flat upon the meeting-rail, the cut-away portion being of sufficient length to extend beyond the attaching-plate 12, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The lower end of the adjusting-bar is provided on one side with a too 29, which'operates'to limit its'upward swing, or, in other words, prevent it from,
being moved past the vertical position, (shown in Fig. 1,) and on the opposite of the said end of the bar is a toe 31,- beneatli whichthe hooked terminal 20 of the bolt is adapted [to pass 'when the bar is in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and thus prevent any rattling. When used as a sash-lock, the adjusting-bar while the lug 16 has an upper may occupy either a vertical or horizontal position, preferably the latter, without interference with the other parts of the device. When the bolt is in engagement with the keeper, as shown in full lines in Fig. 3, and it be desired to release the sashes, the dog 22 is lifted to move it out of engagement with the lug 16, whereupon the latch may be swung laterally to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the stop-lug 17 serving to limit the movement of the latch. To lock the two sashes together, it will only be necessary to swing the latch in the opposite direction, the inclined face of the lug l6 operating automatically to lift the dog to permitit to pass between the two lugs 15 and 16.
Where the device is to be used for holding the sashes slightly open, the adjusting-bar is moved to the position shown in full lines in Fig. l and the latch is moved to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The upper sash is then pulled down or the lower sash is raised to the desired point, whereupon the latch'will be moved to its locked position, (shown in full lines in Fig. 3,) thus to bring the bolt into engagement with one of the notches of the adjusting-bar and holding the sash in the desired position.
The device of this invention is exceedingly simple of construction, will be found of the highest efficiency and durability in use, and willdin a positive manner effect the results define Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined sash-lock and sash-adjuster, a keeper carried by one sash, a pivoted latch carried by the other sash, and a laterally-notched adjusting-bar pivoted to the keeper, and having its lower portion provided with a lateral toe to be engaged by the latch to prevent rattling.
2. In a combined sash-lock and sash-adjuster, a keeper carried by one sash, a pivoted latch carried by the other sash and arranged for horizontal movement, a laterallynotched adjusting-bar pivotedto the keeper and adapted for movement from a horizontal to a vertical plane, and means carried by the bar to engage with the latch to prevent rattling.
3. In a combined sash-lock and sash-adjuster, a keeper carried by one sash, a pivoted latch carried by the other sash, a laterallynotched adjusting-bar pivoted to the keeper and provided with a cut-away portion to bridge the terminal of the latch, the lower portion of the said bar being provided on one side with a toe to be engaged by the latch to prevent rattling.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHIE DE LAN.
