THE GRA HIC C0.PH 0T0 .-LlTH.39 & 41 PARK PLACE, N-Y.
1 1i STATES STEPHEN D. ARNOLD, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO P. & F. CORBIN, OF SAME PLACE.
llVlPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR MEETING-RAILS CF SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,652, datedApril 6, 1875; application filed February 13, 1875.
CASE 0.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN D. ARNOLD, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to fasten the meeting-rails of sashes together, and the improvement is especially available with sashes that have a central bar or mullion.
I employ a handle that is received between the side pieces of a jaw, and to which a spring is applied, so that the handle latches upwardly into a notch when the fastening is locked.
The holder is hook-ended and operated by the handle, and with sashes containing a central mullion, the keeper-plateis constructed so as to pass upon both sides of said mullion, and thereby avoid injury to the wood-work of the sash.
In the drawing, Figure l-is a plan, partially in section of the said sash-lock. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Fig. 3 is an elevation with the sash-lock retracted; and Fig. 4 is a section of the jaw and lever-handle at the line as.
The plate a is adapted to being fastened to the top meeting-rail of the lower sash,
and above it is the box I), that is nearly semicircular in shape, and riveted to the plate a. In the curved front part of this box is an opening, through which the lever-handle 0 passes, and a notch is provided at 2, into which the lever-handle c springs up when the sash is locked, and thereby said handle is retained until it is pressed down previous to being turned back.
The lever-handle c is received between the side pieces of the jaw d, and attached by apin, 3, so that the lever and jaw may turn together; but the lever may be moved slightly up or down in latching or unlatching at the notch 2, the spring 4 serving to raise the lever.
The hook-ended holder h swings with the jaw (I, and engages with the keeper-plate l by passing into an opening through its vertical face; said hook-ended holder being of a tapering or cam shape, so as to draw the parts of the sashes together.
Where the lever c and jaw 61 areused in a sash wit-houta center bar or mullion, the hookended holder h will be cast in one with the jaw 61, and project at the opposite side of the fulcrum t to said jaw; but with a fastening adapted to a sash with a center bar or mullion, it is necessary that the hook-ended holder be placed sufliciently at one side of the fastening to pass into the keeper-plate l clear of the said mullion, so as to avoid cutting such mullion. I therefore employ the link a, that is hinged at its ends to the lugs that project from the sides of the hook and jaw, respectively, as shown in Fig.1, and the keeper-plate l is made of a box shape, with the top and back portions notched, as at Z, so as to set in front and at the sides of the center bar or mullion of the upper sash, but only project in front of the mullion the thickness of the front or keeper plate of the box. Behind this front keeper-plate the hook-ended holder catches when the lock is moved to secure the sashes.
The box of the fastening is provided with a knob, r, beneath which is a conical skirt, 8, that is separate from the knob, but is held in place by the screw it of the knob, that passes into the top plate of the box.
By this construction the ornamental knob can be applied to or removed from the sashlock, the other parts being independent thereof, so that two styles of sash-locks can be made from the same patterns.
I claim as my invention- 1. The lever-handle 0, jolnted to the jaw d, and provided with a spring, in combination with the hook-ended holder h, plate a, box Z), and curved front plate, notched at 2, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The lever-handle c, jointed to the jaw 61, in combination with the hook-ended holder h, link a, and keeper-plate l, substantially as set forth.
3. The sash-lock, made with alever and hookended holder between the plate a and box b, in combination with the knob 1" and skirt 8', connected by a screw to the top of the box I), as set forth.
Signed by methis 9th day of February, 1875.
S. D. ARNOLD.
