PATENTED JAN. '26, 1904 JL-A. CRAIG.
LATCH.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY 22. 1903.
UNITED STATES Patented January 26, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
LATQH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.750,435, dated January 26, 1904. Application filed July 22, 1903. Serial No. 166,568. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES A. CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockbridge, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to latches for barndoors and other slidable doors; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of the latch. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the latch. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line a: w in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on the line 3/ y in Fig. 1.
A is a door, which is struction and which is to a door-post B.
C is a latch-plate, which is provided with two arms 0, which are bolted to the door-post. The door-post has a beveled portion 5 between the arms 0, so that the latch-bolt may engage with the plate.
D is the latch-bolt, which has a front end portion (2, which is hooked and beveled, so as of any approved conslidable with reference to engage with the latch-plate automaticallywhen the door is slidagainst the door-post.
E is a plate of spring-steel secured to the other end of the latch-bolt and bolted to the door by bolts 6.
F is'a guard-bracket for the front end portion of the latch-bolt. This bracket straddles the latch-bolt and is secured to the door.
G is a handle secured to the latch-bolt, and this handle projects through a hole 9 in the door and has a nut h on its secures it to the latch-bolt.
H is a ring secured to the stem of the said handle under the said nut.
I is a hasp, which is hinged to the lower of the two arms 0 and which extends across the free end portion of the latch-bolt and engages with a staple z' in the door-post.
The latch-bolt is operated from each side of the door by means of the handle and the attachment H and is forced out of engagement with the latcl -plate against the pressure of the spring E.
The latch is locked by passing a padlock or other suitable locking device through the staple, so as to secure the hasp across the latchbolt. When the latch-bolt is not locked the hasp hangs down.
What I claim is The combination, with a slidable door, a latch-bolt having a hooked catch at one end, a spring-platesecured to the said door and to the other end portion of the said latch-bolt, a handle projecting from one side of the latchbolt through a hole in the door, and an opening attachment secured to the other side of other end, which the said latch-bolt; of a door-post, a latchplate provided with two arms which are secured to the said door-post, a staple projecting from the door above the said arms, and a locking-hasp pivoted to the lower of the said arms and projecting across the free end portion of the said locking-bolt and engaging with the said staple.
In testimony whereof I aifix in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. CRAIG.
