Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD W. I-IUBBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in I-Iinges, of which the following is a specification. y

My present invention pertains to hinges, and is designed more particularly as an improvement upon the hinge constituting the subject of my Letters-Patent, #1,001,405, dated August 22, 1911.,

The object ofmy present invention is to provide a hinge that .is strong and durable and calculated to be expeditiously and easily applied, and one that is nished in appearance, and so far as appearance goes is screwless-fi. e., has no" exposed screws to mar the workmanlike exterior thereof.

Other features of advantage will be fully appreciated from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification,l in which:

In Fig. 1, I show a door casing 1 and a i door 2, connected through the medium of my novel hinge to the casing. The hinge is made up of two members 3 and 4 which are identical in construction except that the member 8 is provided with two spaced knuckles 5 separated by an intervening space while the member 4 is provided with a single knuckle 6 which in practice is interosed between the knuckles 5. The said {nuckles are connected together through the medium of pintle 7 having a head 8. The members 3 and 4 are each of hollow form and the outer portion 9 of each member is countersunk in and arranged flush with the door casing or the door, as the case may be,

and is strongly connected with the door or the door casing through the medium of a screw 10. The head 11 ofthe screw is entirely arranged within the hollow member,

and from'this it follows that when the cover plate complementary to the member is placed in position and secured by brads 12 to the door casing or to the door, as the case may be, the screw will lbe entirely hidden from view and the finished appearance and solidity of the hinge, so far as appearance goes, will be materially enhanced. The cover plates which are of thin sheet metal and numbered 13 lit tight against the inner flat sides of the members 3 and 4, and each cover plate is rovided with a tongue 14 that merges at its inner edge in a curvilinear lip l5, having at.i 16 a depressed portion. By virtue of the lip 15 of the plate complementary to ,fthe member that is fastened to the door being provided with the depressed por tion 16, it will be manifest that there will be no frictional contact and wear between the said lip and the knuckle 6 incidental to the swinging movements of the door.

It will be gathered from the foregoing that notwithstanding its practical advantages as pointedy out in the foregoing, it will be noted that my novelhinge can be placed and fastened in position quite as readily as an ordinary hinge.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

In a hinge construction, the combination of a door casing and a door having countersinks, hinge members of hollow form having outer reduced portions arranged in the countersinks and Hush with the door casing and door, respectively, and also having apertures in said reduced portions; one of said members having knuckles separated by an intervening space and the other having a knuckle interposed between the first-named knuckle, a pintle connecting said knuckles, screws arranged in said apertures and connecting the members to the door casing and door, respectively, and having heads disposed in the hollow members, and closure plates fastened against the door casing and the door, respectively, and arranged against the inner sides of the members.
