BANE STOCK, OF NEW HAVEN', CONNECTICUT.
HINGE-CLAMP.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented July t?, 1915.
Application filed April 28, 1915. Serial 1\T c. 24,491.
To all 'LU/tom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, BANE STOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinge- Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to hinges, and more particularly to devices of this character capable of being easily and quickly clamped to the rear wall of a box to eliminate the necessity of using screws or similar fastening devices.
A further object of the invention is to construct a hinge of this type in such a manner as to provide a comparatively long threaded bearing for the clamping screw.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge of this nature which is exceedingly simple in construction, durable, and one which may be manufactured at a very small cost.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a detail perspective view of one of the hinges. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through a box showing the same equipped with the hinge.
Referring to the drawing the numeral l designates the rear wall of a box, of an conventional form and to which the hinges are designed to be attached. The hinges consist of a leaf 2, which is pivotally connected to the pintle 3 carried by the upper end of the plate 4, said plate being provided adjacent its upper edge with ahorizontal slot 5. Each hinge further consists of a plate 8, provided at one end with a downwardly directed iange 6, the lower corners Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the of which are formed with projections 7 designed to bite into the wall 1 when the hinge is in place. The plate 8 is engaged at its other end in the slot 5, and terminates in a second flange 9, said flange being directed similarly to the flange 6, and resting flush against the adjaent face of the plate 1.1-, to which it may be welded or otherwise suitably secured. The flange 9 and plate 4; are each provided with threaded perforations l0 and l1 for engagement by the screw l2, said screw having one of its ends provided with a finger-piece 13, while the other end of said screw has rotatably connected thereto a circular plate 14 which is adapted to bindingly engage the adjacent face of the box wall when the screw is manipulated to attach the hinge tothe box. The leaves 2 are so formed that the lids 14 may be easily attached thereto, and swung to close or open the box when desired.
While the construction herein described is more particularly used for attaching lids to boxes, it is obvious, however that the device can be used for pivotally connecting a drawing board or writing table to the usual household table.
hat is claimed is hinge of the class described comprising a plate, a leaf pivotally connected to the plate, a jaw having a horizontal arm, said jaw having projections carried thereby for engaging the wall of a box, said plate having a slot formed therein for engagements by the inner end of the arm, said inner end terminating in a flange which engages the plate and is :fixed thereto. a clamping screw passable through the plate and iiange for engaging the wall of the box, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I ai'iix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
BANE STCK.
