IMPR6VEMENT IN TABLE-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 79,27 8, dated June 27, 1876; application filed May 27, 1876. I p
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED. H. CUTLER, of Bufl'alo, Erie county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Hinge, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a View illustrating the use of my improved hinge. Fig. 2 is an edge viewof the hinge opened, and Fig. 3 is an edge View of the hinge closed.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved hinge for table-leaves, and other devices. and articles of furniture, &c.,'-where a hinged leaf is used, which shall be so constructed as not only to allow the leaf and top to be flush when extended, but mainly to allow the leaf, when down, to hang immediately under the top, and flush with the edge thereof, thereby getting it more out of the way, allowing compactness of form and in packing for shipment, and in doing away with the usual edge and groove of the leaf and top.
The invention consists in a hinge having one of its plates bent twice at right angles, and the other plate bent once at right angles, as hereinafter described, to adapt it for use, as set forth.
A and B are the plates of the hinge. The plate A, which is attached to the table-top, is bent twice at right angles, and the plate B, which is attached to the table-leaf, is bent once at right angles. These bends form a U- ofl'set in the hinge when opened out, as shown in Fig. 2, which said offset is placed in a mortise in the lower side of the table-top. This mortise should be made of such a depth and in such a position, and the bends of the hingeplate should be at such a distance from the pivot of the hinge, as to bring the said pivot to a point equally distant from the upper surthe edge of the top.
This hinge is intended for use on any device, and in connection with anything by which the object desired will be attained by its useviz., compactness in folding or opening the leaf, door, or other part.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A hinge having one of its plates, A, bent twice at right angles, and the other plate. B, bent once at right angles, and jointed together,- substantially as herein shown and described, to adapt it for use, as set forth.
