UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS W. SANGSTER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK H.
. RANSOM, OF SAME PLACE. j
yoUPLEx ERASE-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,817, dated March 25|, 1884. Application med August 11,1883. (No model.)
.T0 all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, Anios W. SANGsTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buf-` falo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplex Brace-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to act as a strong hinge and brace for a trunk; and it consists of a trunk-hinge in combination with a brace hinge, as will be fully and clearly hereinafter shown by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front or face view of the hinge, showing its position when the cover is closed; and Fig. 2 represents a side elevation, showing the position of the hinge and brace when the cover of a box or trunk is open.
The two parts of the main hinge a a are attached to the trunk and cover in the usual way, by screws or other equivalent means, through the holes c2. The parts a a' are jointed together by a pin, a3, in the ordinary manner, and are each provided with a bent or grooved portion, a4, to one of which, a, is jointed, by a pin, a5, a short plate, o. To the opposite end of the plate c is jointed, in any well-known Way, (by a pin, c', for instance,) a plate or supporting brace-piece, o2, having its opposite end, c3, jointed to the hinge-platea bya joint, c* The brace o2 is provided with a bent portion or groove, c5, for the purpose of allowing the parts to lie flat when the box or trunk cover is closed.
The operation of the device is as follows: By referring to the drawings it will be seen that when the cover of the box or trunk is closed the duplex hinge is in the position shown in Fig. l, and by the dotted lines e e" e2 in Fig. 2. When the cover is opened, the jointed plate c turns on its pivot ai, from the position shown by dotted lines to the position f, and at the saine time the supporting-piece c2 swings out, so as to act as a brace, as shown, and prevent the cover from falling back too far. It also doubles the strength of the hinge. The plate c should be of the proper size to allow the cover to incline backsufficiently when open, and its length can be varied, so as to supportthe cover at any angle desired.
I am aware that bracehinges for trunks have heretofore been made having a long and short brace-plate combined with a hinge. I therefore do not claim such, broadly; but
W'hat I do claim is- A duplex brace-hinge for trunks, consisting of the jointed hinge-plates tta, having the bent or grooved portion a", in combination with the hinged plate o and brace'plate c2, provided with a bent or grooved portion, c5, one end of which plate is jointed to the hingeplate by a joint, c4, and the other end to the plate c by a joint, c', substantially as and for the purposes described.
, AMOS W. SANGSTER.
