BRAGB HINGE. No. 295,818. Patented Mar; 25,1884;

AMOS W. SANGSTER, OF BUFFALO, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK. H.
RANSOM, OF
BRACE- SAME PLACE.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 295,818, dated March 25, 1884. Application filed December 10, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, AMOS W. SANGSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brace-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a strong, durable hinge for trunks or boxes; and it consists of a trunk or box hinge, in combination with a brace adapted to catch and hold 7 the hinge at a certain point when the boxcover is open, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter shown by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face View of the hinge. Fig. 2 is a section through the hinge and a portion of a trunk and cover, showing it open; and Fig. 3 represents a section through a hinge and brace, also through a portion of a trunk and cover, to which it is attached, showing it closed.
(t represents the upper plate of the hinge, and a the lower plate. They areseoured together by a joint, (L in the usualway; but the center of the joint of is left open, so that the brace 0, when closed, may lie fiat and close to the hinge and out of the way. The brace is provided at its lower end with an angular or bent portion, 0'. This portion passes into a narrow openin 0 in the lower hinge-plate. It is formed, as shown, so as to adapt it to turn out as far as is required (see Fig. 2)without being liable to be drawn out of place, and is provided with a narrow portion, 0, (shown in Fig. 1,) so as not to reduce the strength of the hinge by making the opening a too wide, and also to assist in strengthening the hinge.
6 represents a flat spring secured to the lower hinge-plate by a rivet, f. The lower portion of this spring presses against the lower part of o, and thereby forces the brace up flat against the hinge when or as often as the cover of the trunk or box is closed. (See Figs. 1 and 2.)
Thenpper hinge-plate, a, is provided with an opening, 6', and the upper end of the brace is provided with a narrow portion, 6 adapted to fit into the opening ewhen the trunk-cover is open, and thereby acts. as a brace to prevent the cover from falling back too far, the corners or shoulders c 6* preventing it from going intothe opening 6' too far. The portion 6 is bent slightly forward, so as to allow it to enter the opening, and, if desired, a projecting piece, 6 may be placed over theopening e to facilitate the entrance of the part c, and the part c may be made longer, as shown by the dotted lines 9 in Fig. l, and formed so as to always remain in the opening 0, and when the trunk-cover is opened it will pass in until stopped by the shoulders e e. the spring might be dispensed with. The parts of the cover and trunk f f are hollowed out, so as to leave room for the spring and the portion 6 f f represent a portion of the trunk and cover.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description and drawings.
I claim as my invention--- l. Atrunk-hinge consisting of the jointed hinge-plates a a, provided with the openings 0 c, in combination with a brace, 0, having the parts 6, the bent portion 0, and a spring, 6, for the purposes described.
2. The hinge a c, having the opening a in combination with the braee-platec, provided with a narrow portion, 0 substantially as and for the purposes specified.
AMOS W. SANGSTER.
