THE GRAFHKI CO. NM
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM SHUNK, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,265, dated December 12, 1876; application filed October 7, 1876.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM SHUNK, of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Door-Stop, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved door-stop. Fig. 2 is a top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improvement in stops for holding doors or shutters open or shut; and it consists of a spring formed from a ribbon of steel, the extremities of which are attached to the wall, and the center portion bent into a threefold loop forming a springclamp, which engages with the outside of a loop or knob attached to the door.
In the drawing, A represents the part that is attached to the door. It consists of a ribbon of steel bent to form a loop or eye, and is attached to the door by means of screws which pass through ears a, formed by bending the ends of the ribbon outward. Bis the part that is attached to the wall for receiving the part A; and it consists of a ribbon of steel that is formed into three loops, 1) b and 0, two of which b 1) project outward, forming a spring-clasp which is capable of receiving the part A, and retaining it with sufficient force to prevent the door or shutter from clos ing by a pressure of wind or other slight cause. The clasp thus formed presents rounded ends, which readily slip over the loop attached to the door, and press the smaller part of it with a force which retains the door, but which may be overcome by pulling the door. The ends of the ribbon forming the clasp are formed into cars, through which screws pass for securing it to the wall. The stop not only answers the purpose of holding the door, but it also serves as a buffer which prevents the door from striking the wall as it is thrown open.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination, with steel ribbon A, having ears a, a, of the steel ribbon B, having ears and loops b b 0, the loops 1) projecting outwardly to form a spring-clamp, substantially as shown and described.
