E. W, GOODELL; WINDOW SHUTTER PASTENER.
N0. 600,718. Patented Mar. 15,.1898.
ERNEST W. GOODELL, OF DOVER, NEW' JERSEY.
WINDOW-SHUT TER FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,718, dated March 15, 1898.
Application filed January 6, 1898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST W. GOODELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dover, in the county of Morris and State of New J e1- sey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Shutter Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shuttenfasteners, and espe cially to a means for holding the shutter either partially open or closed; and it consists in the provision of a rod which is pivoted to the casing of the window, the notched end of which rod is adapted to engage with a stepped spring member secured to the shutter, the said spring having a hook adapted to pass through an aperture in the shutter, whereby the rod may be detached from the said spring when the latter is drawn back into a recess of the shutter, when the shutter will be allowed to swing shut.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective View of a pair of blinds, showing my improved attachment connected thereto, one of the blinds being shown as partially opened and one closed. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the sliding retaining-bar.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the easing of the window, to which are secured the ears B, to which is pivoted one end of the rod 0.
Attached to the outer face of the blind is a casing D, having the flanged longitudinal edges, with a space intervening. Within this casing the outer end of the said rod (which has a shouldered end 0) slides, and its free Serial No. 665,790. (No model.)
cushion E in the said casing as the blind is swung open, so as to break the force of the swinging shutter or blind in case it swings out to its outer limit.
In order to hold the blind at different positions when it is partially opened out, the spring-bar G is provided. This bar has a series of notches and is fastened at one end to the shutter, while its other end is adapted to be drawn back into the recess H in the blind. Secured to the free end of the said spring-bar is a hook K, which is adapted to engage with a fastener on the window-sill as the blind is closed. As a person reaches out to close the blind and pulls out on the hook K the sliding end of the said rod will be released from the notch in the said spring-bar and the blind will swing on its hinges uninterrupted.
While I have shown my invention as applied to a window shutter or blind, it will be understood that the device may be applied to a door for the purpose of forming a stop therefor,in which case the invention may be slightly altered, if found necessary, in order to adapt it'for such use, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A window-shutter fastener, having in combination, the rod, pivoted at one end to the casing, the blind or shutter having a recess therein, the notched spring-bar secured to the blind,'so that the free end of the said spring may be drawn back in said recess, the hook secured to the spring and extending through the shutter, to engage a keeper, and whereby the spring-bar may be operated, the slotted casing secured to the outer face of the blind, and in which the shouldered end of the said rod slides, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERNEST W. GOODELL.
