SASH FASTENER.
APPLiCATION FILED APR. 13. 19l6.

ARTHUR W. KCINER, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
SASH-IEASTENER.
Application filed April 13, 1916.
To all whom it may concern.
,Be it known that I,.A.RTIIUR7. KOINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Fasteners, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to sash fasteners.
The object of my invention is to produce a device adapted to hold a window sash in raised or open position against the force of gravity or aganist the action of a spring attached thereto to overcome the force of a counter-weight. A further object thereof is to produce a device by which a window sash may be held open and which may be released to permit its closing from a position remote therefrom. Another object thereof is to produce a pivoted bar carried on a window frame adapted to engage a plate on the sash to hold the sash in open position together with means for closing the sash when released from engagement of said locking bar and means for releasing the engagement of the bar with the sash from a remote position; and a still further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and efficient sash fastener than has heretofore been attained.
To these ends my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts:
frame and sash equipped with my device.
Fig. 2 is a side vlew of the same in open position; and
Fig. 3 is a similar view thereof in closed position.
window frame of ordinary construction which are carried the sash 2 which, asgf" Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 14:, 1917.
Serial No. 90,901.
hereinafter described, I provide the coil spring at having rings 5 and 5 at their opposite ends adapted to engage the hooks 6 and G fastened in the sill and lower end of the sash respectively. Said spring is of such strength thatwhen stretched by the opening of the sash it will be capable of drawing the sash closed against the force of the counterweightsB when released from engagement with the locking bar 7. It will also be appreciated that said spring may be removed from position when not in use.
The means for holding the sash in open position comprises the bar 7 having an orifice adjacent to its inner end, through which it may be pivotally fulcrumed on a screw 9 secured on the frame 1 at right angles to the plane of the sash 2. The inner end of said bar is bent outwardly from the plane of the window frame and its eXtremitv 10 is preferably rounded to limit the area of contact with the shoulder 12 on the plate 11 carried on the sash, hereinafter described. The opposite end 13 of the bar is provided with an orifice 1-1 through which a cord 15 may be attached while the opposite end of the cord 15 is placed in a position remote from the window.
Adjacent to the end of the longer member of said bar an eyelet 16 is secured upon the window frame between the sash and the bar of the window sash and adj acent to the edge of the window frame a plate 11 is attached. i Said plate comprises a thickened portion 18 Figure 1 is an elevation of a window}.
having an orifice therein, through which a crew 19 may be passed to secure same on he sash, and a depending apron 21 of lesser hickness than the main portion of the plate, which forms therewithashoulder 12 adapted -','.'to be engaged by the rounded head 10 of Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a the bar 7 to hold the sash in open position.
ably beveled to limit to the minimum the shown, may be supported in adjusted posi contacting surfaces of same and the head 10 tions by the sash weights 3 in the ordinar way.
It Will be appreciated however that? 'of the bar to facilitate their disengagement. It will be appreciated that the apron 21 may my device may be applied to window sasln; be dispensed with if desired, but is provided that are not supplied with counter-weights ;'for the purpose of preventing scratching or or other means for holding same in open ,p marring of the sash in the operation of the positions. it device.
For the purpose of overcoming the actionligt In operation, the spring 4 may be atof the counter-weights 3 and drawing thegtgtached to the hooks 6 and 6 on the sill and sash to closed position when released, asfithe sash respectively, and the sash raised with one hand to such position that the bai- 7 will engage the shoulderon the plate 11 and thus hold the sash in'raised position.
The free end of the cord 15 may then be carried to a position remote from the Win dow and when is desired to have the wlndow closed a tug on the cord wlll operate the bar 7 to disengage its head irom contact with the plate 11 and thus permit the sash to be closed by the action of the" spring 4.
It Willbe appreciated that sucharrange lnent will: permit a personto close'a bedrooni wihdo w from a position remote from the open windoWY Having thus described my invention, 'What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is! A sash'holden'comprising a bar pivotally securedon a window frame having anout'-' wardly bent upper end provided with a open position, an eyelet secured upon'the' window frame adjacent to the oppositeend ofsaiidbar; and'a flexible cord attached to the lower end of the bar and passing mentbf the bar and'plate may "be severed from a' position remote from the windovv.
