SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 319,532, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed February 5, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door and Shutter Catches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of catches for holding doors and shutters open which comprise a catch upon the door or shutter and a springclasp for engaging the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and improved device of this class, which will possess advantages in point of iuexpensiveness, durability, and general efficiency; and the invention consists in the details of construction, as hereinafter fully dcscribed, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 isa perspective view illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View in detail taken through the catch and spring-fastening. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view ofthe catch.
Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the door, which is hinged in the usual manner, and is provided near its bottom with a lateral catch, B, comprising an approximately U-.
be formed with an enlargement, c, and the plate is provided at its central portion with a longitudinally-disposed groove, 0
E designates the spring-clasp, which is pref- 50 erably formed of a single strip or plate, and
is disposed horizontally, as shown. The spring comprises a main securing portion, 6, and two bowed or curved spring-arms, c c, the latter having their ends curved inwardly, as shown at 0 and having their points 6 0 turned in opposite directions, thus forming an approximately X-shaped mouth to the spring. The portion 6 of the spring is set in the groove 0, and is secured by means of a bolt or rivet, F, passing through the plate 0. The sides of the groove 0 obviate vertical displacement of the spring.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The door has merely to be operated upon its hinges, so that the catch will engage or disengage the double spring-clasp. In engaging the clasp the beveled sides b engage the ends 6 and spread the arms of the spring apart, so that the catch enters and is held to retain the door in position. WVhen the catch is pulled from engagement with the spring, it engages the points 6. and spreads the arms of the spring apart and passes from between the same.
The catch is preferably placed upon the door with relation to the spring-clasp, so that it will engage the nearest arm of the spring before it strikes the other arm, whereby after the door begins to hang or sag from use the catch will engage the spring at a point just between the curved ends 6 so that it will easily and readily enter between the arms.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination, with the longitudinallydisposed plate provided with the groove 0", of the horizontal double spring-clasp having the straight central portion sealed and secured in said groove and comprising the two bowed or curved spring-arms having their adjoining ends curved inwardly and provided with the oppositely-turned points 0 within the bowed spring, and a catch for engaging the arms, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL W'EAVER.
