I! '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER Nnrss, a citizen of the United States, residing atValentine, in the county of Cherry, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Fasteners; and I, do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1
This invention relates to wire gates, and lEttS particular reference to fasteners there- The object of the invention is to provide a Wire gate fastening means which will not only draw the wire strands into a taut condition, but will also support the movable end of the gate against lateral swinging movement when in its taut position, this securing of the gate being accomplished by a peculiar relative positioning of the tightening chain or other flexible element with respect to the free end of the gateand the locking lever. More particularly, in carrying out the invention, I have provided upon the end of a stationary horizontally projected arm, a locking lever to which is secured a flexible connection which can be looped over the post at the free end of the gate, the relationship being such that when the locking lever is thrown into gate closing position, the gate post is thrown upon the opposite side of the stationary armfrom that upon which the locking lever is pivoted, so that the flexible connection is drawn tightly across the stationary arm, thereby, in eflect binding the gate against lateral movement, withrespect to the stationary gate post.
With the above objects in view, and such others relating to the details of construction, as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The lower end of the post 5 is adapted to be inserted intoa loop 6 of wire or other suitable material, which surrounds the lower end of the post, at such a height above the wall as. to afford a proper step for the post 5. Secured to one side of the post 1, so as to extend horizontally forward therefrom into the space of the gate-way, is an arm 7 which may be fastened to the gate post in any suitable manner, as by bolts or spikes. Pivotally carried upon the outer face of the horizontally projected arm 7 is the rock lever 8, the latter terminating at its free end in a hand grip 9. At an intermediate point,
the lock lever 8 is apertured so as to have linked thereto the flexible connection 10. The free end of the flexible connection 10 is formed into a loop 11 which may be reached 5, in the closed position of the gate, nor
mally lying directly opposite the center of the post 1. Furthermore the lever 8 1s mounted upon the outer side of the arm 7,
that is, upon the opposite side to that occupied by the bar 5 in the closed position of the gate. Therefore, when the lever 8 is thrown into horizontal position, so that it parallels the arm 7 and contacts the length of the outer face of the latter, the flexible connection 10 extending from the bar 5 to the lever 8 lies across the upper edge of the arm 7, the curvature of the lever 8 being such that the upper edge of the arm 7 projects above the lever when the rear end of the latter is in- Patented Apr. 23, 191%. i
