To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. DE WVrrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shutter fasteners.
The object of my invention is to provide a shutter fastener which will not onlyinsure that the shutters remain in closed position unless the mechanism be manipulated from the inside but will prevent the manipulation thereof from the outside for the purpose of moving them to open position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and highly efficient device that may be readily secured to the shutter fasteners most commonly in use and can be held in operative position by means of a window sash.
lVith the above and further objects in view my invention consists in the combination, arrangement, and details of construction shown in the drawings and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts, Figure 1 is a fragmental cross sectional view of my invention shown in operative position, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of two shutters in closed position showing my de vice in operative position thereagainst, Fig. 3 is a detail view, partly broken away of a latch casing, and Fig. & is a top plan detail view of my invention.
Reference being made to the accompanying drawings, which are merely illustrative of my invention, my device is shown in operative position.
1 indicates the exterior of a forwardly projecting window sill, upon which is mounted the window 2, the lower sash of which is designated 3 and arranged to bear down upon said sill. Hinged upon the members 4 and 5 respectively are the shutters 6 and 7 respectively, which will preferably be formed with lap joints designated at 8 and 9 respectively.
The latch members are arranged as in the conventional manner having their operating parts designed to make engagement with suitable staples or similar members mounted upon the wall of a building and as the construction of each of said latch members is similar, my description will be limited to one, and it will be noticed that it will only be necessary to provide one attachment to be described for the purpose of preventing the opening ofthe shutters by external manipulation. v
The latch members are mounted each in a preferably cylindrical casing 10 which is screwthreaded at 11 so that each casing may be secured upon one of the shutters, and remain in secured position therein.
Fulcrumed upon a transverse pivot 12 mounted in the casing 10 and located preferably at a central point is a latch member 13 which is composed of an enlarged portion 14.- projecting through the casing and adapted to engage with a staple or similar abutment in the conventional manner. Said latch member is also formed at one side of the piv0t12 with a shoulder 15 which is normally caused to bear against an inwardly turned offset 16 formed at the month end of the casing 10 by means of the bar or spring 17 having one end disposed in the seat 18 formed by said offset 16, said spring normally bearing against the surface 19 of said casing and also against the raised surface 20 formed at the pivotal end of the relatively elongated body portion 21 of said latch member, said elongated portion terminating in a hook offset 22 having the notch 23 for suitable engagement with a pin or any other suitable abutment fastened upon the wall of a building.
The arrangement of the spring is such that when in normal position, it will hold the elongated body portion 21 of the latch member free from contact with the interior surface of the casing 10, said portion being of lesser width than the diameter of said casing, so that it may be removed against the tension of said spring for the purpose of releasing the latch member from operative position.
Reference being made to Fig. 2, a position of the latch member is shown from which may be disengaged from the staple 24. by grasping the latch member 18 and moving it against the tension of the spring 17 out of said staple.
The latch member has an opening into which may freely project the hook offset 26 disposed substantially parallel to the body p rtion 27 of a detachable metallic arm, which terminates in an enlargement 28 in which an opening 29 is formed: it will be seen that the metallic arm 27 is formed flat at 30 so that it may overlie the window sill 1, and a pin 31 will project from said sill through the opening 29 in said arm. It will also be seen that the arm 27 may be placed in operative position by inserting the hoot: 26 through the opening 25 in either of the latch member's and then placing the opening 29 in said arm over the pin 31. By caus ing the lower sash 3 of the window 2 to bear upon the flattened end 30 of the metallic arm 27, said arm will be held against displacement trom the opening 25. When thus disposed it will be impossible to separate or force apart the shutters 6 and 7 by grasping the end 22 of either of the latch members for the purpose of disengaging the latch member 13 from the staple 24L, owing to the circumstance that said latch member 25 is held against movement by the hook 26 formed upon the arm 27 so that even if the staple 2st were ineffective to hold the latch member 13 when the opposite end 22 thereof is manipulated the arm 27 will prevent the shutter being forced to open position.
It is obvious that when the window 22 is lifted the arm 27 may be disengaged readily so as to permit the shutters to be opened.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination with a window sill provided with a stud, a window sash and a shutter provided with a horizontally swinging latch, and means for securing the latch in locking position comprising a stud fixed to the sill and a separable locking element formed of flat plate and at one end provided with an aperture to fit over said stud and at its opposite end provided with a hook to engage said latch, said stud being arranged out of vertical alinement with relation to said latch and off to the side opposite that to which the latch swings to inoperative position, the securing means being held upon said stud by the sash when it is closed to prevent disconnection of the securing means from the shutter latch and thereby hold the latter from movement out of locking position.
