HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16,1912.
Application fi1ed May 18, 1911. Serial No. 628,004.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES RIoHARDsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Castle, in the county of Lawrenceand State of Pennsylvania, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges, and has for its leading object the provision of an improved form of hinge particularly adapted foruse in connection with screen or storm doors which it is desirable to readily remove when the season for the use of said doors is passed.
A further object of my invention is the provision of an improved supplemental plate for attachment to a door casing hav ing means for engaging the hinge plate of a spring hinge, whereby the door to which the hinge is secured may be readily secured to or removed from the attaching plate carried by the door casing without necessitating the removing of the retaining screws or the removal of the hinge pin and thus the separation of the various parts of the hinge.
Other objects and advantages of my improved hinge will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any changes or modifications in the specific structure shown and described within the scope of the claim without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete device employed to support a door. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged end view of the device. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional View thereof. Fig. & represents a detailed View of the attaching plate secured to a door casing. Fig. 5 represents a view of the blank from which said attaching plate is formed, and Fig. 6 represents a detailed view of the supplemental locking pin.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a door casing, to which is secured the supplemental hinge or attaching plate 3 of my invention, said plate being formed from a blank having the rectangular base portion provided with the curved ear 4 at each end adapted to be bent upward at right angles to the base portion the base portion having a plurality of apertures 2 therein to engage the screws for securing the plate in position, while the ears are each formed with a plurality of apertures 5 to receive the locking pin for securing the said supplemental plate to the hinge of the door.
The hinge proper comprises a plate 6 hav ing the apertures 7 to receive screws for securing said plate to a screen or other door and having the ears 8 formed integral with each end and bent upward therefrom, said ears having portions projecting beyond the edge of the plate.
Passing through the projecting ends of the ears and through the ears 9 of the plate 10 is the pivot or hinge pin 11 which serves to pivotally connect the two sections of the hinge, and by reference particularly to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the plates 6 and 10 are so connected that the plate 10 is disposed with its lower face slightly above the upper face of the plate 6 when the hinge is in opened position.
The plate 10 is formed without screw receiving apertures, and in use the plate 3 fits on the under side of the plate 10 and has its under side lying flush with the under side of the plate 6, while passed through the apertures 5 of the ears 4L of the plate 3 and the aperture 12 of the ear 9 of the plate 10 are the locking pins 13 having the heads 14. and having the serrations 15 formed thereon.
Mounted upon the hinge pin 11 is the helical spring 17 having a projecting end 18 bearing against the plate 6 and having a second projecting end 19 which rests against the locking pins 13 and by engagement of the serrations 15 of said locking pin prevents the slipping or accidental withdrawing movement of the pins.
It will be observed that the head 20 of the pivot pin and the upset or riveted end 21 project from the ears 9 and the ears 1 of the plate 3 have the recesses 22 formed therein in which the side of the hinge pin fits, the hinge pin thus partially engaging the plate 3 and aiding in preventing rattling or play between the hinge plate 10 and the supplemental securing plate 3.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the construction of my improved hinge and attaching plate therefor will be readily understood, and it will be seen that I have provided a simple, efficient, practical and durable device of this character by the use of which a door may be quickly and easily hung or removed without disturbing the operating portions of the hinge, and which device utilizes the tension of the hinge spring to secure the locking pin in position.
I claim:
The combination with a door casing, of a plate secured thereto, integral upstanding ears formed on the plate, said ears having recesses formed in one edge and a plurality of apertures formed intermediately in the ears, a hinge plate fitting against the plate of the casing and having upstanding ears engaging the inner face of the ears of the casing plate, a second hinge plate having upstanding cars, a hinge pin pivotally connecting the ears of the two hinge plates, a helical spring mounted on said hinge pin and having one end bearing against the inner face of the second hinge plate, locking pins passing through the apertures of the ears of the casing plate and through the ears of the first mentioned hinge plate, said pins having serrations formed thereon near their head, and the helical spring having a projecting end bearing against the pins and engaging the serrations thereof to secure the locking pins in position, the hinge pin fitting in the recesses of the casing plate to prevent play of the plates with respect to each other.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
