T alt whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK B. Srnmwnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ludington, in the county of Mason, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sliding bolts.
The main objects of this invention are first, to provide an improved sliding bolt, which is adapted to clamp the door or lid, that is apply pressure thereto when the bolt is shot. Second: To provide an improved sliding bolt embodying these advantages, which is reversible in that it may be applied either to the door or to the casing as may be desired. Third: To provide an improved sliding bolt, which is simple and economical in structure and easily applied.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodi ment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

Fig. V is a transverse section taken on a line corresponding to line 5 of Fig. H. Fig. V1 is a detail longitudinal section corresponding to that of Fig. 1E, with the parts reversed, that is the keeper is in this view mounted upon the door casing and the bolt on the door, whereas in the other figures the keeper is mounted on the door and the bolt on the door casing.
In the drawings, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are Specification of Letters Eatent.

Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a door and 2 door casing. The casing of my improved lock preferably consists of an outer member 3, having a chamber therein with lateral extensions at its rear end and a back plate or member 4:. These casing members are preferably formed of sheet metal, the member 3 being provided with attaching flange 3 at each side of the bolt chamber, the attaching screws 5, being arranged through these flanges and through the back plate, while the attaching screws 6 are arranged through the portions forming the extensions of the casing chamber. The plate t is flanged upwardly at its rear end as at 7, there being a slot like opening between the casing members through which the lever 8 is arranged. The lever 8 is provided with diverging pivot ears 9 at its inner end, one of the attaching screws 6 being arranged through one of the ears, the other ear being arranged in a slot 10, in the rear end of the bolt 11 and being secured to the bolt by means of the pivot 12. The pivot 12 is retained by the casing. The screws 6 are disposed equal distances from the center line of the casing, so that the lever 8 may be mounted on either screw as desired, the other ear being secured to thebolt. The bolt 11 is supported for longitudinal movement in the chamber, the rear end of the bolt being tapered to permit a limited lateral movement on the actuation of the lever. This of course could be provided for by tapering the chamber, but I consider the most practical way to be to taper the bolt as shown. The bolt is beveled at 13 to engage the keeper 14, which has an inclined bolt engaging portion 15.
The keeper is preferably struck up from sheet metal, the bolt being adapted to coact with either the outer side of the engaging portion 15 of the keeper as shown in Figs. 1 to V inclusive, or its inner side as shown in VT, depending on the relation of the bolt and keeper; that is whether the bolt is mounted upon the casing or upon the door. The structure is readily adapted for application in either relation, it being only necessary to turn the bolt over when it is changed from one position to the other and facing keeper to correspond. I preferably arrange the lever so that it is in its down position when the bolt is retracted, so that the bolt is not likely to be projected by jars or shocks, or to he accidentally projected. The belt engaging the keeper With the cam or clamping action is subjected to sufhcient friction so that it is not likely to be retrac ed, except through manual manipulation. With the parts thus arranged the desired clamping action is secured in a simple light structure,

I am aware that considerable variation and structural details are possible, but as such variation. will no doubt suggest itself to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, l have not attempted to illustrate or describe the same herein.

In a sliding bolt, the combination With the casing, comprising a sheet metal. outer casing member having a chamber With lateral extensions its rear end and an attach ing flange at each side of the chamber, a sheet metal back plate having an upturned flange at its rear end, there being a slot like lever opening between said casing members at their rear ends; a pair of easing attaching screws adapted to act as lever pivots ar ranged through the extension portions of said casing chamber, a bolt having a beveled keeper engaging portion said bolt being tapered reaiwvardly to permit lateral movement, its rear end being slotted; a lever having a pair of pivot ears, one ear being mounted. on one elf said attaching screws, the other ear being arranged in the slot of said bolt and pivotally secured thereto, said 1 clined bolt engagin portion.
