. L. H. POSTER.
HINGE.
No. 479,936. Patented'Aug. 2, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEBBEUS H. FOSTER, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,936, dated August 2, 1892.
Application filed November 9, 1391. Serial No. 411,349. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEBBEUS H. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hinges; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the two parts of the hinge, whereby a door or cover to which the hinge is applied may be readily attached or secured in position without withdrawing the pivot-pin of the hinge, and further, whereby when these hinges are applied to both edges of the door or cover the pair of hinges upon either side may be used as a pivot upon which to turn the door or cover, or both may be locked to hold it in its closed position.
The invention further consists in the peculiar construction of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box with its cover, showing my hinge applied thereto upon both sides of the box and cover. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the parts of the hinge. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of one of the parts, and Fig. 4 is a vertical central section through one of my hinges as applied in use.
A is a box, to the sides B B of which and the cover 0 my hinges are applied. Each hinge consists of the two plates to I), provided with suitable means of securing them to the box. The plate I) is provided upon one edge with the socket c, at each end adapted to receive the pin d, said plate b being cut away at e between the sockets c. The plate a is provided with a substantially semicircular hookf, formed upon one edge of the plate, and an oscillating locking-finger g, passing through an aperture in the plate a and provided on the opposite side with a crank-arm h, by means of which the finger may be rocked over or away from the hook f. The
rear side of the face a, as shown in Fig. 3, is provided with a cut-away portion 1', in which the crank-arm it engages with a shoulder j at opposite sides thereof, forming stops to limit the movement of that crank-arm. The parts being thus constructed and a pair of the plates 1) being secured upon the sides B B of the box, with the pins arranged upon the outer edge, as shown in Fig. 1, and the cover being provided with the plates at to hinge the cover to the box, the hooks f are engaged with the pins d, and the crank-arm his turned until the finger g engages upon the pin, as shown in-Fig. 4, firmly locking the cover in position. If the cover be now closed and one or both of the cranks upon the plate I) on the opposite side of the cover be likewise turned to engage with the pins, it is evident that the cover will be firmly looked upon the box. To open the box, it is evident that the cover may be turned upon the hinge at either edge by simply disengaging the finger gin the hinge upon the opposite edge and turning the cover upon those hinges, the fingers g remaining engaged in those hinges upon which the cover is turned. It is also evident that this construction can also be applied to doors and other similar articles.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a hinge, the combination of the plates a b, the pin d upon one plate, the hookf upon the other plate, the oscillating finger g, engaged in an aperture in the plate a, and the crank-arm h upon the opposite side of said plate for actuating said finger, substantially as described.
2. In a hinge, the combination, with the plates a b, of the sockets c on one plate, the pin d, engaging said sockets and spanning the cut-away portion e of said plate I) of the inwardly-curved hook f on the plate a, the oppositely-extended finger g, pivoted in an aperture in said plate, the crank-arm h upon the opposite side of said plate, and the shoulder j, the parts arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A hinge consisting of two members, one of which is provided with a pintle or pin and the other formed with an extended hook arranged to engage said pin and having a movable finger extending over the hook when the same is in engagement with the pin, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEBBEUS l-I. FOSTER.
