To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY SMITH, a citizen of the United States of'America, residing at La Junta, in the county of Ot-ero and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to looks, and has for its object the production of an efficient means whereby a door will be normally held in a closed position.
Another object of this invention is the production of an efficient lever whereby the keeper may be easily moved when it is desired to open the door.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is'a side elevation of the door and support showing a portion of the lockv mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the door in a closed posit-ion showing the lock in perspective. Fig. 3 18 a perspective view of the lock showing a portion of the guard yoke and keeper latch partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section of the device. Fig. 5 is a central vertical section of the keeper latch and frame showing a portion of the guard frame. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the keeper frame is formed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that this device consists of the usual door 1 which is provided with the jamb or support 2. Mounted upon. the support 2 is a keeper frame which comprises a rectangular body 3 from which extend the sides 4 which terminate in the flaps 5. The sides 4 are bent along the scored portions 6 so as to extend at right angles to the body 3 while the flaps 5 are bent along the scored portions 7 so as to extend at right angles to the sides 4 whereby to form a substantially square keeper frame. Near the upper portion of the sides 4 there is provided a pin 8 upon which the keeper is pivotally mounted. This keeper comprises a body 9 strips of material, oneof which terminates in the pivot eye 10 which is adapted to rest which is formed of two parallel upon the pin 8. The other strip extends upwardly and terminates in a laterally extending finger 11. It will be seen that by use of the enlarged body 9 the finger 11 will be normally held on a horizontal plane. Near the upper and lower portions of the body 3 there is provided a plurality of apertures 12 through which any suitable securing means 13 is adapted to pass for holding the keeper frame upon the support 2.
Mounted upon the door vided a supporting plate 14 through which the securing means 15 is adapted to pass for holding the plate in its correct position. The supporting plate 14 is provided with an opening 16 through which the journal 17 is adapted to pass. Pivotally mounted upon the journal there is an operating lever or arm 18 which is provided with a substantially U-shape outer end 19 which terminates in the laterally extending fingers 20. In order to hold the journal within the opening 16 there is provided a guard frame 21 which is provided with a U-shape body, and the laterally extending feet 22 through which the securing means 23 is adapted to pass, whereby the journcl member 17 is held in the opening 16. The journal member 17 is provided with an extended neck portion 24 upon which the operating handle 25 is posi- 1 there is protio-ned, the handle 25 being held thereon by means of the screw 26 which is threaded into the extended portion 24. The door 1 is pro vided with a transversely extending opening 27 which is adapted to register with the opening 16 whereby the journal member 17 is adapted to be rotatably mounted therein.
Mounted upon the outer portion of the journal member 17 is a crank handle 28 which is provided with the inwardly extending neck 29 whereby to space the han dle 28 from the outer portion of the door. Formed adjacent the neck 29 is a collar 30 which is provided with a flange 31. Carried by the door 1 there is a retaining collar 32 which is provided with the overhanging flange 33. This flange 33 is adapted to be positioned upon the flange 31 whereby the handle 28 is held upon the journal 17.
It will be seen that by use of the two handles the operating lever or arm 18 may be swung in either direction and from either side of the door;
. The supporting plate 14 is provided with an extended body 34 which termina es in a U-shape guard yoke 35. The end portion of the guard yoke 35 is provided with a U- shape pocket portion 36 through which the arm 18 is adapted to pass for the purpose of limiting the pivotal movement of the arm in each direction. I
It will be seen that the guard yoke is provided with an aperture 37 which is adapted to register with the eye screw 38 which is carried by the frame or support. When it is desired to lock the door the shank of a padlock may be passed through the aperture and the eye screw at which time the door may be locked.
In operation the door will be moved toward the jamb or support 2 at which time the extended body 34 will strike upon the bowed portion 39 of the keeperlatch. Since the keeper latch is pivotally mounted upon the pin 8, the portion 34 will ride upon the bowed portion and across the horizontal finger 11 until the extended port-ion 34 passes beyond the finger at which time the upper portion of the finger will spring up and rest within the guard yoke 35. It will be seen that should the door he pushed from the outside the extended portion 84 will strike upon the horizontally extending finger 11 which will prevent the door from being opened. If it is desired to open the door by pressing down on the arm or moving the arm 25 to one side, the U-shape portion 19 of the operating arm 15 will strike upon the horizontal finger l1 and Will in this manner push the latching keeper down at which time the guard yoke and extended portion 8% will ride over the upper portion of the keeper whereby the door may be opened.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the side of a house or support may be provided with a second keeper frame, whereby when the door is swung to an open position it will be held in such position without danger of the same being closed by wind or other force.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door and a support, a keeper frame provided with laterally extending sides carried by said support, a latching keeper pivotally mounted upon said sides, said latching keeper comprising a plurality of parallel strips, one of said strips terminating in a pivot eye for pivotally mounting said keeper upon said sides, the other strip extending to form a bowed portion and terminating in a horizontal finger, a plate carried by said door, said plate adapted to rest behind said horizontal finger for holding the door in a closed position, an operating arm carried by said door which is adapted to press said latching keeper down so as to disengage said plate whereby the door may be opened when so desired.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door and a support, a keeper frame carried by said support, a latching keeper pivotally mounted upon said keeper frame, a plate carried by said door, said plate provided with an extended portion which terminates in a U-shape guard yoke, one portion of said guard yoke provided with a U-shape pocket, an operating.
arm carried by said door, said arm extending through said pocket for limiting the pivotal movement thereof, said arm adapted to bear down upon said latching keeper for disengaging said keeper from said extended portion of said plate whereby the door may be opened.
