N5. 815,537. j j PATENTED MAR. 20, 1906.

'SASH FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED $110.15, 1905.
v the city of Reading,
AMOS KIssINGER or READINGQPENNSYLVANIA, Ass-IGnQR 'OFfoiIE-HALE To HENRY ,FQQ 'W Rama Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 20, 1906.
Application filed December 15,1905. Serial No. 291,819.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMos KISSINGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fasteners for the meeting-rails of window-sashes; and-my object is to provide a lock having a supported case covering the strike-engaging sweep or lever and its operating-handle to protect the same against damage and lock it in adjusted positions.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, and the novel features are pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a sash-- fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the case looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, the case 1 is formed with a single horizontal plate 2, car. ried above the sash-surface upon fasteningears 3 and 4, which bear upon the'sash, said plate 2 serving to carry the lever 7 by means of a rigid depending pivot-post, the head of which is adapted to bear upon the sash, as.
hereinafter described.
5 is the strike, also provided with'ears for securing it to the other movable sash and having a proiection 6 for engagement with the locking-p ate 7.
, Upon the under side of the top or cover plate 2 is formed a pivot-post 8, upon which the lever 7 is pivotally mounted. A head or washer 9 is secured to said post 8, either by a screw 10, as shown, or by a rivet, to retain the employed and is provided with an integrallyformed handle 11, extending beyond the cover-plate 2 of the case 1 and lying below the same. Said lever 7 is pivotally mounted on pivot-post 8, as previously stated, and is adapted to be turned thereon to engage or disengage the strike 5.
The lever 7 is formed with a central recess I v12 forv the reception of a coiled spring 13, which spring bears against the head 9 on the pivot-post 8 and serves to press the lever against the cover-plate 2 of the case.
The cover-plate 2 is made with notches 15 and 15 in its outer rim, into which the handle 11 of the lever 7 is ressed by the spring 13 to lock the same in a justed positions. Aslight prressure upon the handle 1 l'releases the lever cm the locking-notches, when it may be turned to either engage or disengage the strike 5.
It will be seen that in my improved sashfastener as described the lever lies entirely below the'cover-plate 2, so that it is fully protected thereby, while the cover-plate itself is strengthened by the central supporting-post against ,any blow upon the same such as it is liable to be subjected to by-raising the win- (low-sash so as to forcibly strike against the window-frame. The headed pivot-post thus effectually strengthens the plate 2, which covers the lever, while the latter incloses the spring whereby it is automatically pressed against the rim of the plate to secure it in adjusted position,-thus providing a very neat, simple, and effective fastening device.
What I claim is 1; In a sash-fastener the combination with the strike, of a case having spread-apart fastening-ears and a single horizontal unitingplate therefor forming a cover and provided with'a locking-rim, a headed pivot-post depending rigidly from said plate and adapted to serve as a central support therefor upon the sash, and a locking-lever pivoted upon said postbelow said top plate and having an integrally-formed handle pro'ected beyond said rim, substantially as set orth.
2. In a sash-fastener the combination with the strike, of a case having a top plate provided with alocking-rirn and aheaded pivotand within said recess, substantially as set post depending therefrom and adapted to forth. 1o serve as a central support therefor upon the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature sas a strike-engaging lever pivoted upon in the presence of two witnesses.
5 said post below said top plate and having an AMOS KISSIN GER.
integrally-formed handle projected beyond Witnesses: said rim, and an annular spring-recess, and a HENRY Foon'r,
coiled spring seated upon the p1vot-post head D. M. STEWART.
