THOMAS LEE.EVEBETT, 0F WELLSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
DOOR-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed September 28, 1917. Serial No. 193,774.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LEE EVERETT, an American born citizen of the United States, residing at Wellsburg, in the county of Brooke and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in door fasteners, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a fastener which will supplement the ordinary locks on doors to prevent access to a room.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be quickly and easily applied to any ordinary door to hold the same shut, and further to provide such a fastener which can be readily carried about the person.
A further object of the invention is to make the device so it can be used on either right or left hand doors.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out inthe appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a sectional view of a portion of the door and door jamb showing the in vention in position thereon.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the parts separated.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention, which as shown consists of a plate 1 having one end bent at right angles and reduced in thickness and in width to provide a sharpened point 2. Adjacent its other end said plate is pr vided wi h a pa r of e 3 and 4, one
located on each edge, said ears having their ends rounded 05 and each provided with an opening 5. 6 represents the holding device which is of angular form, one member of which being provided with a slot 7 to re ceive the plate 1, said slot extending entirely through said member centrally thereof so that the plate may enter the slot from the bottom. The other member is provided with a closed slot 8 adapted to receive one of the ears, and said ears are so proportioned that when the plate is placed thereover the opening in said car will be above the top of the plate so as to accommodate a. cotter pin 9 which will hold the plate on the ear. I
prefer to form the horizontal member 10 of the plate 6 of greater width at the fiont end than at the rear end and to connect the clifferent widths together by inclined portions 11, and the member 12 of said plate is of the same width as the front end of the member 10 thereby securing a broad bearing surface against which the door engages.
The operation of the device will be obvious from the foregoing description. when it is desired to fasten a door, the cotter pin is removed and the plate 6 detached from the ear. The plate 1 is then placed with the sharpened point between the door frame and door casing, and the door then closed. The pressure of the door will force the point in the crevice between the door frame and the casing. The angular plate is then put in po sition with the ear projecting through the opening 8 and the cotter pin put in position. It will thus be seen that the door is held firmly closed and cannot be opened without removing the device. If the door opens on the left hand side, my device can be used equally as well, as it is only necessary to reverse the plate and this will bring the other ear uppermost and the parts can be attached as before.
The device is well adapted for use in hotels, though of course, it may be used in any other situation, and owing to the small size of the parts, said device may be carried about the person.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to he understood that I may make slight changes the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the plate having one member thereof provided 10 several parts, provided that such changes with a slot to receive the elongated plate and fell Within the scope of the appended claim. its other member resting on said plate and What I claim is:- provided With an opening to receive either A device of the class desoribedeoinprising one of the ears, and a cotter pin adapted to an elongated plate having one end bent at pass through theopening in the ear to hold 15 right angles and sharpened, ears formed on the second plate thereon.
the edges of said plate adjacent its other end In testimony whereof I alfix my signature. s and provided with perforations, an angular THQMAS LEE EVERETT.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Gommissioner of Eatents, Washington, l3.
