UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IONE' F. PARSONS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DOOR-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, 10m: F. PAnsoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a door fastener, and particularly pertains to a device which is adapted to be attached to a door independent of locks and bolts and the like for fastening it in a closed position.
It is the object of this invention to provide a portable device for securely fastening a door against being opened from the outside, and which device is so constructed that it may be easily attached to and removed from any door without the use of nails, screws, or similar fastenings.
Another object is to provide a device of the above character which is particularly adapted for use by travelers and other persons desiring to securely fasten their room doors against being opened from the outside, and which is so designed as to be adjustable to admit of its being attached to doors of various thicknesses.
Other objects will appear in the following specifications.
The invention consists of the parts and the combination and construction of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of a portion of a door and door-jamb, showing the invention in plan as applied.
In the present embodiment of my invention I have shown it as consisting of a pair of separable parts, one of which consists of a metallic plate A of peculiar formation, to which the other member is designed to be removably attached. The plate A is here illustrated as being substantially rectangular in outline, and is formed at one end with oppositely extending flanges 2-2 and 3, which project at right angles to the side faces of the plate A, as shown in Fig. 2. The flanges 2-2 and 3 are struck from the plate A in such manner that the flange 3 will project outwardly from the end of the plate A at its center, while the flanges 22 will project from the end of the plate in a Specification of Letters Patent.

direction opposite the flange 3 and on opposite sides thereof; the flanges 22 terminating in points at their outer ends to form short teeth which are adapted to be em bedded in a doorjamb, as will presently be described. Formed in the plate A, adjacent the end opposite the flanges 22 and 3, is a perforation 4L, and extending from the perforation 4 toward the flanges 22 and 3 is a slot 5, one end of which opens to the perforation 4 and the other terminates, approximately midway of the length of the plate A. Formed in the side walls of the slot 5 is a series of angularly disposed notches 6; the ends of the notches 6 on one side of the slot 5 being staggered in relation to the notches on the opposite side thereof. Similar notches 7 are formed on the outer edges of the plate A, and are so positioned that their inner ends will be staggered in relation to each other and to the inner ends of the notches 6, as is particularly shown in Fig. 1.
The removable member before mentioned consists of a cylindrical drum 8 on the end face of which is formed a stud 9, come spending approximately in length to the thickness of the plate A, and on the outer end of which is formed a button or head 10 of a diameter slightly smaller than the perforation 4. The stud 9 is of a (liamter approximately corresponding to the diameter of the notches (i and 7, and is designed to be inserted in the notches 6 and 7 as will presently be described, so as to pivotally attach the drum 8 to the plate A. The stud 9 is positioned eccentric to the center of the drum 8, so that when the stud 9 is engaged by any one of the notches 6 and 7 the drum 8 will be pivotally mounted to rock eccentric to its axis. Formed on the drum 8 is a handle 11 of any suitable description, by means of which the drum 8 is designed to be rocked on its pivot stud 9.
In the application of this invention the drum 8 is separated from the plate A, and the latter is positioned on the outer face of a door-jamb B with the teeth or flanges 2-2 adjacent the door-stop C; the plate A being pressed against the jamb B to slightly embed the teeth 2*2 therein, so as to retain the plate A in a vertical position against the face of the jamb with its outer end extending into the room adjacent the doorcasing D, as shown in Fig. 3. The door indicated at E is then closed so that its outer edge will pass over the outer'face of the plate A and crowd it against the door-jamb B, thereby forcing the teeth 2-2 into the door-jamb B; the door E closing against the flange 3 which will extend between the outer face of the door and the door-stop C.
The drum 8 is now attached to the plate A A is governed by the thickness of the door E, and the stud 9 is inserted in a notch 6 or 7 which is spaced from the outer face of the door E, a distance slightly less than the widest distance betwen the center of the stud 9 and the periphery of the drum 8, in such manner that when the drum 8 is rotated by means of the handle 11 on the stud 9, the outer periphery of the drum 8 will contact the outer face of the door E, and act as a wedge to crowd the door E against the flange 3 on the plate A.
In positioning the stud 9 in the notches 6, the head 10 is passed through the perforation l, whereupon the stud 9 may be moved into any one of thenotches 6, through the longitudinally extending connecting slot 5, while in disposing the stud 9 in the notches 7 it is only necessary to insert it in the notches from the outer edge of the plate A. By staggering the notches 6 and 7 in relation to each other, as shown in Fig. 1, the drum 8 may be adjusted to a variety of positions on the plate A, so that it may be adapted for operation on doors of various thicknesses.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the plate A has been attached to the door-jamb B by means of the teeth 2, and the door E is closed and clamped against the flange 3 by means of the drum 8, the door E will be securely fastened in its closed position against being opened from the out side, thus obviating any dependence upon bolts or looks.
Having thus described my invention, what formed with a series of staggered notches,
a cylindrical drum having a stud eccentrically mounted on one end thereof engageable with the notches in the plate, a door engaging flange formed on the plate and bentv at right angles thereto in such manner that the edge of the door may be clamped between said flange and said drum, and jamb engaging teeth formed on the plate, said teeth extending opposite the door engaging flange.
2. A door fastener comprising a plate, a revoluble drum eccentrically mounted on said plate and detachable therefrom, means for adjusting the position of the drum on the plate including a pivot stud on the drum engageable with a series of staggered notches formed in the plate, a handle on the drum for the rotation thereof, door engaging means on the plate opposite the drum, constructed to permit the edge of the door to be clamped between said drum and said door engaging means, and means on the plate for engaging the door-jamb.
3. A door fastener comprising a plate having a series of outwardly extending notches and a series of inwardly extending notches, all of said notches being staggered with reference one to another, of a cylindrical drum having a stud eccentrically mounted thereon, said stud being adapted to be engageable with any one of said notches, a handle for turning said drum, jamb engaging teeth formed upon the inner end of said plate, and a door engaging flange formed upon said plate adjacent said jamb engaging teeth and oppositely turned therefrom in such manner as to permit the edge of said door to be clamped between said flange and said drum.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
