Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VINCENT lV. LEiVIS, OF IIARRIMAN, TENNESSEE.
COUPLING-FASTENER FOR DOOR-KNOBS, 860.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,559, dated February 27',
Application filed February 9, 1899. Serial No. 70 5,140. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LVINCENT W.LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residin g at I-Iarriman, in the county of Roane, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Coupling-Fastenings for Door Knobs or other Solid Substances; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement i'n coupling door-knobs and making substantial connections to marble slabs and other solid substances.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple inexpensive adjustable door-knob fastening, and which is also applicable in making substantial connection to other solid substances; and it consists in a novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings. I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of door-knobs coupled by this device and in proper position in the door. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a section of the door-knob, showing the position of the coupler when being placed in the knob. Fig. 4 is a face View of the door-knob. Fig. 5 is an end view of the coupler. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal view of the bar to which the couplers are attached when applied to door-knobs.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A in Figs. l and 2 represents a portion ofa door.
b represents door-knobs diiferently Viewed.
c in Figs. l and 2 represent escutcheons against which the end of the coupler works.
D is an adjustable metal coupler, which is fully illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 5, and which is made in two pieces and fastened together when in place by screws j, as shown in Figs. l and 2. When the screw is removed, the long end of the coupler can be opened and the short end brought together in a parallel position, as shown in Fig. 3, in which position it can easily be placed in a door-knob having a cavity in it that is larger at the bottom than it is at the outer edge, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 1I, and by bringing the open end of coupler D, as shown in Fig. 3, together it spreads the short end, which is placed in the knob, thereby filling the cavity and making a substantial fastening to the same, as shown in Fig. 2.
E in Fig. Gis a square coupling-bar by which door-knobs may be coupled together and adjustment made to accom modatedoors of various thickness, as shown in Fig. 2.
F in Fig. 3 is a clip or tooth which when the coupler is brought together comes in contact with notches G in coupling-bar E in Fig. 6, thus making a substantial connection with the coupler-bar, and a means by which the adjustment is made in providing for doors of Various thickness, and by means of this tooth in coupler D and the notches G in couplingbar E the closest desirable adjustment can be made in taking up lost motion between the escutcheons c,thus removing the necessity of using washers, as is the case in applying other door-knobs.
rin Fig. 5 represents the square opening or recess in the end of coupler D and into which the end of coupler-barE is placed when put in position.
h in Fig. 4 represents the cavity or mortise in the face of a door-knob or other articles to which this metal coupler can be applied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a door-knob fastener the combination with the coupler made in two parts and provided with a cavity, one of said parts provided with a tooth extending crosswise of said cavity, of a coupling-bar provided with inclined notches on one end and on opposite sides thereof adapted to enter the cavity in the coupler and to be engaged by said tooth, and a screw for fastening the two parts of the coupler together substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
VINCENT W. LEWIS.
