Specification of Letters Patent.
Batented April 9, 1907.
Application fileti March 24, 1906- Serial No. 307.900-
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHANNING H. SPEN- OER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maryland, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Keepers for Door- Locks, &c., which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a striker or keeper for use with door-locks and like devices; and the primary object of the same is to cheaply construct a device of this class from a single blank of sheet metal having suitable stiffness to render it durable and to facilitate the formation thereof and proper shaping of the same to adapt it for practical use.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a portion of a door and door-frame, showing a lock thereon and also illustrating the improved striker or keeper. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank.
Like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 designates a securing member, and 3 a striker or keeper plate provided with angular end tongues 2 and with a slot 4. The parts of the improved striker or keeper are preferably made of sheet metal having sufficient thickness to render it durable when the striker-plate 3 and the tongues 2 are bent in planes at right angles to the securing member 1, as clearly shown by Fig. 2.
In applying the improved device the securing-plate 1 is disposed against the surface of the door-frame close to the door or other closure and secured, and when in this position the striker-plate 3 will stand inwardly in planes at right angles to the frame. The slot 4 will be elevated or the entire striker or keeper will be arranged in such manner that the latch or bolt of the door may freely pass therethrough and be withdrawn therefrom.
One of the main advantages of the improved striker or keeper is that it is not easily'broken, and, furthermore, in view of the simplicity of the parts and capability of forming it from a single piece of material it can be cheaply manufactured and sold. It also dispenses with the necessity of mortising the door-frame to apply it in position.
It will be understood that changes in the proportions and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is A device of the class specified, constructed from a single piece of sheet metal comprising a securing-plate, and a striker or keeper bent at right angles thereto and provided with an intermediate slot, the striker or keeper also having integral triangular end tongues which are bent at right angles thereto and projected over and engage the ends of the securingplate, the latter and the striker being of equal length.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHANNING H. SPENCER.
