To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM FIRFIELD, of

' Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hasps, of which the following is a full," clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in hasps; and it has for its object to provide a hasp formed in sections so constructed that when applied to an object and engaged with a staple or other keeperthe section secured to the support by screws or other fastening devices will be completely covered by one of the other sections, which will extend over its face and'top and bottom edges, rendering it impossible to remove said fastening devices while the hasp is in looking engagement with its keeper.

A'further object of the invention is to accomplish the above result without materially adding to the cost of the ordinary hasp.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the improved hasp appliedto a door and shown as in engagement with akeeper, the said section being taken practically on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the improved hasp in the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a rear'elevation of the hasp with its members or sections extended.

The hasp is made in three sections A, B, and O, the said sections being connected with one another by means of hinges of any approved construction. The section A is provided with the usualslot 10 to receive the staple 11 or other form of keeper, and the censides, while the rear section 0 is of such size and shape that it may enter the space between the flanges of the intermediate section.

The. hasp is preferably made as shown in Fig. 4,in which it will be observed that the sections B and O are made in a measure tapering, the section 0 being much narrower than the intermediate section B, and the section 0 has any desired number of apertures 13 produced in it to receive screws 14 or other forms of fastening devices.

In applying the hasp the section 0 is screwed to a door 15-for example, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2in such manner that when the sections A and B are folded over on the attached section 0 the section A will extend beyond the edge of the door and over the frame 16, to

which the staple 11 may be attached, and

devices of the staple, which will be covered by the outer free section of the hasp.

Having thus described my invention, 1

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Ahasp consisting of pivotally connected sections, one outer section being adapted for attachment to a support, the other outer section to receive a keeper, and the intermediate section being adapted to be folded over and .to conceal the outer section adapted for attachment to a support, the said intermediate section being provided with flanges upon its inner face between which the said outer section is received, as and for the purpose specified.
