To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to hasps of the common type, such as are used `for securing the doors of barns and similar structures, and I aim to provide a simple, cheap and durable device of that kind.
The construction, arrangement and operation of the parts of my invention will more fully appear from the following specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying the same, in which:
Figure l is a front elevation of my device, in position when in use. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof, in the line w-m of Fig. l.
l represents a portion of a door, and 2 a part of a building to which said door is to be attached.
3 is a hasp, preferably formed of a strip of metal, and provided at its edges with outwardly turned flanges 4. At one end the hasp is secured to the door by a staple 5, and near the opposite end of the hasp is an aperture 6, for the accommodation of a staple 7, secured in the building. The hasp 3 is centrally provided with an outwardly projected boss 8, formed by forcing a portion of the metal of the hasp outwardly, and
ivotally supported on the outer face of such boss, by means of a pin or rivet 9, is the usual hook l0, adapted to engage the staple 7. The hook l0 is provided on one edge with a thumb-piece 11, formed integrally therewith by bending outwardly a portion of the metal of which said hook is formed.
The outer face of the boss 8 projects outwardly slightly beyond the edges of the flanges 4, so that the hook 10 is permitted to swing freely, and without friction against such flanges or any part of the hasp. In hasps wherein the hook swings directly against the face of the hasp, there is usually more or less friction, interfering with the free movement of the hook, and it frequently happens that the hasp and hook become rusted together, so as to further prevent the operation thereof. This is impossible in my form of the device.
By the use of the flanges 4 additional strength is given to the hasp, so that the thickness of the body of the plate can be reduced, without sacrificing any of the strength thereof. Said flanges also add to the ornamental appearance of the hasp.
The boss 8 not only serves as an elevated support for the hook 10, but the inner head of the rivet 9 is contained therein, preventing any abrasion of the door thereby, as happens in hasps wherein the rivet projects inwardly beyond the face of the hasp.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A hasp comprising a sheet metal plate having longitudinal marginal 'strengthening flanges extending throughout the entire length thereof, a boss on said plate intermediate the fianges, the outer faces of the flanges and boss being in substantially the same plane, and a hook pivoted to said boss.
