R. H. BARNARD.
DOOR CHECK.
No..262,557. Patented Aug. 15, 1882.
INVENTOR.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD H. BARNARD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-CH ECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No- 262,557, dated August 15, 1882.
Application filed June 7, 1882. (No model.)
cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Holders and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, illustrating myimproved door-holder as applied to the floor. Fig. 3 is a plan view, showing it applied to a wall; and Fig. 4 is a view of the frame detached.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to door-holders, or that class of devices by which doors may be retained in an open position; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
1n the drawings, A represents the frame of my improved door-holder, which consists of a segmental plate,B,having a leg, O,and brackets D D, by which it may be secured in position by screws or otherwise. Plate B is provided on its outer side with a groove, E, extending through its entire length.
F is a cylindrical casing containing a coiled spring, the ends of which are connected so as to form a circular spring, G, as shown in Patent No. 213,611, granted to myself on the 25th day of March, 187 9. The front end of easing.
F has an opening, H, and its rear end is provided with a pair of legs, I I, straddling the leg 0 of frame A,which is provided with lugs J J, and adapted to be secured to the same by a bolt, K.
A washer, L, may be interposed between the leg 0 and cylinder F to hold the spring G in position; but said washer may be dispensed with when desired.
A similar cylinder, F, containing a spring, is provided with long legs M, straddling the segmental plate B, and adapted to be pivoted upon a bolt, N, at the lower end of the leg 0. One of the legs M carriesa set-screw, 0, adapted to be. tightened against the side of the segmental plate B, and thus retain the cylinder F in any position to which it may be adjusted.
P is a plate adapted to be secured to the door, and provided with a shank, Q, having a suitably-shaped bulb or head, It. The shank Q is surrounded by a flange, S, in which is fitted a cushion or collar, T, of india-rubber or other suitable material, to take up the shock when the door is thrown open and into en gagement with the holder.
In operation, when the device is attached to the wall of a room the cylinder F is used and the part F of course dispensed with. The cylinder or casing F may readily be adjusted at any desired angle,so that the bulb B of the door-catch shall readily enter and engage the coiled spring, by which it is held very securely until it is desired to close the door, when it may be released by employing sufficient force to pull it out. In cases where the device may not be conveniently attached to the wall, it may be secured to the floor, and the part F is then detached and cylinder F substituted, in the position and for the purpose set forth.
This improved door-holder ,is exceedingly simple, durable, and useful alike for the doors of street'and railway cars, and for those of private and public buildings. It may be readily adapted to any position in which it is to be secured. It may be observed that the groove E in the segment-a1 plate B serves to receive the end or point of the bulb or head R of the door-catch when the device is attached to the wall.
My improvement, it will be observed, consists especially in the construction of the frame and the combination therewith of the pivoted cylinder F, which may be easily adjusted to any angle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the frame A, having segmental plate B, of the pivoted cylindrical casing having holding-spring G, and a setscrew for securing said casing in any position to which it may be adjusted, asset forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD H. BARNARD.
