DOOR-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1911.
Application filed June 8, 1910. Serial No. 565,776.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door-fasteners, and has for an object to provide an improved fastener adapted to retain the door I in a closed position when the same is swung into such position under the action of a spring or the like.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a leaf-spring for attachment to a door casing to yieldingly receive a retaining plate which is carried upon a door in order to retain the door in a closed position, the leaf-spring being so formed that the free end of the same is protected from engagement with passing objects.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved fastener applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a top edge view of the fastener partly in section as applied to a door. Fig. 3 is a face view of the fastener as applied to a door.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a door casing in which is mounted a door 11 of common form. The door 11 is provided with a retaining plate 12 comprising a sheet of metal having a pair of spaced longitudinal slots 13 to adjustably re ceive clamping screws 14. The screws 14 pass through the slots 13 and into the outer face of the lock-stile of the door 11. The outer end of the retaining plate 12 is curved outwardly to form a lip 15 for the purpose hereafter set forth.
The frame 10 carries a base-plate 16 in the form of a sheet of metal having a tongue 17 stamped longitudinally from its central portion, the base of the tongue 17 being at the outer end of the plate 16. The base-plate 16 is secured to the frame 10 by the provision of clamping screws 18, or the like, which pass inwardly through the plate adjacent its opposite longitudinal edges, and
adjacent its outer end to engage within the outer face of the casing 10.
A leaf-spring 19 is carried by the baseplate 16, one end of the spring 19 being positioned against the inner face of the baseplate 16 and against the frame 10. The outer clamping screw 18 passes through the inner end of the spring 19 to hold the spring in position. The clamping screws 18 located adjacent the longitudinal edges of the baseplate 16 engage against the opposite edges of the spring 19 and prevent the lateral displacement of the same. The base-plate 16 terminates a short distance from the inner edge of the frame 10, while the leafspring 19 extends inwardly therefrom and within the path of the lip 15. The outer end of the spring 19 is looped, as at 20, the returned end of the spring terminating at the tongue 17 The spring 19 is apertured, as at 21, at its outer end to receive the tongue 17 which is curved outwardly to form a hook or passage through the aperture 21 to hold the looped portion of the spring in position. The tongue 17 also serves the purpose of warding off objects from the free end of the spring 19. The aperture 21 is of sufficient size to admit of a slight movement of the loop 20 when compressed by the lip 15.
In the operation of the improved fastener, when the door 11 swings into a closed position, the lip 15 strikes against the outer face of the loop 20 and moves the free end thereof inwardly about the tongue 17 to contract the loop and to admit of the passage of the retaining plate 12. The base-plate 16 is adjusted to dispose the loop 20 in the path of the lip 15 and to thereby yieldingly hold the door 11 in a closed position. The plate 12 is adjusted to extend outwardly from the door 11 to take up the wear upon the lip 15 and the loop 20 incident to the use of the de vice.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. In a door fastener, the combination with a frame having a door hinged therein, of a retaining plate adjustably secured against the side of the door and having a lip eX- tending beyond the edge of the door, a baseplate carried by the frame and having a tongue stamped from the central portion thereof, said tongue being curved outwardly to form a hook, and a leaf-spring interposed between the base-plate and the frame and having an outwardly extending looped portion arranged in the path .of the lip, the extremity of the looped portion being apertured to loosely receive said tongue.
2. The combination with a frame, having a door hinged therein, of a retaining plate adjustably carried against the face of the door and projectin beyond the edge thereof, a base-plate carried by the frame in registration with the retaining plate, a leaf-spring carried by the base-plate and having a? looped portion extending outwardly from said base-plate and into the path of said retaining plate, and a tongue carried by the base-plate loosely engaging through the extremity of the looped portion to retain the same in position.
In testimony whereof, I afHX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
