THEODORE CLOUGH, OF DOBBS FERRY, NE\V YORK.
GATE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,191, dated February 21, 1888.
Serial No. 257.299. (No model.)
To (rZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE CLOUGH, of Dobbs Ferry, in the county of estchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gate-Spring, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of door-springs in which a series of plate-springs are provided atone end with a socket hinged to a bracket secured to the gate-frame, and at their opposite ends entering a socket adapted to be secured to the door or gate.
Theinvention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a side view of a gate provided with my improved form of spring, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on line at x of Fig. 1.
In the drawings above referred to, 10 represents a gate of any proper construction, which gate is hinged to a post, 11, and arranged to swing in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2. To the face of the gate I secure a housing, 12, in which there is fitted the end of a spring, 13, the other end of the spring being rigidly connected to the post 11 by a plate, 14, said plate being apertured to receive screws 15, which pass through the plate and engage with the post.
The spring 13 is made from ailat strip, the normal position of which would cause it to extend in a line parallel with that of the portion held beneath the plate 14; or a strip, the nor mal position of which would be as indicated by dotted lines at u, might be employed, the arrangement being such that when the gate 10 is swung in the direction of the arrow the spring will be drawn out of its normal position, and when the pressure or force brought to bear upon the gate is relaxed the spring will act to return it to its normal position, as shown in the drawings, the throw of the gate in the direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow being checked by a stop, 16, that is secured to the gate and bears against a rib, 17, that is secured to one of the gate posts when the gate has reached such position that it will be parallel with the general line of the fence, in connection with which it is arranged.
Having thus described my invention, [claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A gate or doorspring comprising three separate and distinct partsviz.,a plate-spring, 13, an apertured plate, 14, under which the inner end of the spring is clamped between said apertures when the plate is attached, and a housing, 12, into which the outer end of the spring projects and slides, substantially as set forth.
THEODORE CLOUGH.
