Description

L. GLENN.-
TOY.
APPLICATION FILEDVAPRI. 3.- l9l7- Patented Au 14, 1917.
INYENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEY LAWRENCE GLENN, OF SPARTA, ILLINOIS.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented An. 14, 1917.
Application filed April 3, 1917. Serial No. 159,535.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE GLENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparta, in the county of Randolph and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved toy embodying a casing having an opening in one side, a pivotally mounted figure in the casing and means to actuate the figure to display a portion of the figure through said opening, when desired, the object of the invention being to provide an improved toy of this character which is extremely cheap and simple and which is strong and durable and not likely to get out of order.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a toy con structed and arranged in accordance with my invention and showing the figure displayed.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with one side of the casing removed, and showing the movable figure in normal, withdrawn position.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of the same.
The casing 1 comprises a circular member 2 and a segmental member or side 3. The member 2 has a circular flange or wall 4 and is preferably made of sheet metal. The member 3 is also preferably made of sheet metal and is provided with lugs 5 which are arranged and clenched in slots 6 of the flange or wall 4: and serve to secure the side or member 3 to the member 2. Said member 3 being segmental, an opening is formed in one side of the casing, above the upper edge of said member 3.
A movable figure 8 is arranged in the cas ing and is pivotally mounted on a rivet 9 which connects the members 2, 3 the said rivet and pivot being arranged near the center of the casing. Within the scope of my invention the figure 8 may be of any preferred form and may represent the head of a person, or an animal, or otherwise as may be preferred. The figure has a lever arm 10 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patent Washington, .D. O. A V 4 I also provide an operating bar 12 which is made of sheet metal and which operates in a slot 13 with which the peripheral Wall 4 of the casing is provided. Said operating bar has oppositely extending stop lugs 14 to bear against the inner side of the peripheral wall to limit the upward movement of said bar. At its lower end said bar is'provided with a lug 15 which engages in an opening 16 of the arm 10 of the figure 8, the said lug being loose in said openingand forming a pivotal connection between said bar and the arm of said figure.
By depressing the bar the figure may be turned on its pivot and displayed through the opening 7 above the upper edge of the casing member 3, as shown. When the bar is released the weight 11 immediately returns the figure to a normal, concealed position and causes the upper end of the bar 12 to be projected from the upper side of the casing.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A toy of the class described embodying a casing having an opening in one side, a figure pivotally mounted in said casing and having a portion adapted to be displayed through said opening, said figure also having an arm and a weight, said weight serving to normally hold said figure in concealed position, and an operating bar for the figure, pivotally connected to the arm thereof, said bar extending through a guide opening, in the top of the casing and being provided with a stop lug to limit the outward movement of said bar.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
LAWRENCE GLENN.
