UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' GEORGE W. HAWK,
or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO BRITTON L. UDELL, 0F IUNIA, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN Tovs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,095, dated November 24, 1874; application filed May 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HAWK, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and novel Improvement in Toys, which I have named Mimicon, and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being made in so doing to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My said invention consists in combining and so arranging two or more cylinders of various sizes, provided with suitable openings in their sides, for the purpose of admitting the air, the object of which is to cause and produce various sounds while the said combination is being swung through the atmosphere in a circular motion, attached to one end of a cord, while the other end of said cord is held in the hand of the operator.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, reference being made in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure lrepresents a perspective view of my Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing the smallest or top cylinder telescoped or dropped into the large cylinder A, as shown by that portion that appears cut away. Fig. 3 is a vertical or plan view. Fig. 4 represents a pivoted handle, as shown at G I.
Similar letters of reference in the different figures indicate thesame parts in my invention.
A B represent two cylinders, having suitable slots or openings D and E in their sides. J is the top or one end, having a suitable opening, into and through which another cylinder,
B, is fitted, and arranged in such a manner that it may be pushed in or drawn out or turned around, so as to place the slot or opening E 111 any required position, as shown by the dark dotted lines, thereby changing the sounds when desired. 0 is a ring or hole, to which a suitable cord, F, is attached. The other end of said cord F is also attached to apivoted loop, G I, made to revolve as required in the handle H, Fig. 4. The object of the pivoted or revolving loop in the said handle is for the purpose of preventing the aforesaid cord F twisting at certain times, thereby producing long or continuous sounds, as required.
The cylinder B may be drawn out until the flange K comes in contact with the end or top J, thereby preventing the same from being separated from the cylinder A, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3.
It will be observed that, by taking hold of. the handle H, and swinging the Mimicon or cylinders A and B in a circular motion, the momentum and friction thus created in the atmosphere will cause said cylinders to revolve at times very rapidly, thereby creating sounds while in motion. It also will be observed that, by combining three, four, or more different sizes on the same principle, the variety and volume of sounds may be increased.
Having described the construction and operation of my invention, the Mimicon, I will now specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
l. The toy herein described consisting of two or more telescopic cylinders, A 13, having openings or slots D E in their sides, the cord F, pivoted loop G I, and handle H, all combined and arranged substantially as set forth.
2. In a toy for whirling, the combination of two or more cylinders arranged to telescope or slide one within the other, and having suitable slots or openings in their sides, substantially as herein described.
GEORGE -W. HAWK.
