Description

0. PRIOR. ROLLING TOY. APPLICATION FILED my 1a, 1908.
amwnioz Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR PRIOR, OF MILFORD, MICHIGAN.
ROLLING TOY.
Application filed May 18, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR PRIOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling Toys, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys partaking of the character of a trundling hoop, the same consisting of a circular plate of peculiar construction having a flexible element such as a string centrally connected therewith and adapted to constitute an axis of rotation and at the same time to furnish a supporting medium whereby the plate may be maintained in an upright position and be guided while rolling upon its peripheral edge.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device of simple and improved construction which may be maintained indefinitely in motion by the aid of the guiding string and which may be put through a variety of evolutions, thus furnishing amusing and healthful exercise.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein ex hibited, but that changes alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawingFigure l is a perspective view of the improved rolling toy. Fig. 2 is a diametrical sectional view of the same. Figs. 3, at and 5 are diagrammatic views, showing the disk constituting the toy in various positions.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved toy comprises a plate 5 which may be stamped, pressed, spun or otherwise suitably manufactured from a sheet of tinplate or other suitable material, said plate being arcuate in cross section, or dished in shape, and provided along its marginal edge with a roll or flange 6 constituting a tubular rim or tire on the body of the plate which latter, assuming the toy to be sup- Specification of Letters Patent.

ported in a vertical or upright position will be located to one side of the plane of the tubular rim or tire, so that the weight of the dished body will be exerted to pull the tire in the direction of the arrow at in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The plate 5 has a central perforation 7 through which passes the flexible guiding string 8, one end of which 'may be provided with a knot 9 or other means to prevent it from pulling through the aperture; the other end of the string may be provided with a handle, such as a ring 10.
The manner of using the improved toy will be readily understood by reference to the drawing hereto annexed. While the string 8 is held slack with one hand, the plate, in an upright position, is started to roll on its marginal edge upon the floor or pavement, as will be seen in Fig. 3. The weight of the body of the plate will soon cause the latter to tilt in the direction indicated by the arrow at, and the plate, still rolling, will be maintained in this tilted position by the guiding string 8 which is now drawn comparatively taut, as will be seen in Fig. 4s. The operator, holding the string may walk or run at any desired speed, the plate rolling along in the tilted position indicated. By slacking the string the plate may be permitted to drop upon its convex side when, by carrying the string to the opposite side of the plate and drawing it taut, the plate may be rocked upon its convex side and be again raised to an approximately upright position, and its rolling movement be continued. This and other evolutions requiring more or less skill will add zest to the amusement derived from rolling or trundling the plate.
The plate constituting the body of the improved toy may be decorated in a variety of ways; and it may be utilized as a sounding toy by placing fragments of hard material, such as pebbles or bits of metal within the tubular tire 6, as indicated at 12, in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thus making a rat tling noise when the toy is being shaken or slowly trundled.
The toy is extremely simple and capable of being manufactured at a trifling expense; it is calculated to furnish a healthful and entertaining amusement.
The body of the plate 5 may be provided with a recess or depression forming a socket 15, in the convex side of the plate adjacent to the aperture 7, for the accommodation of the knot 9 upon the guiding string, thus preventing said knot from interfering with the rocking of the plate and making a smooth and neat finish to the article.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A rolling toy consisting of a dished plate of circular form, made of sheet metal and provided at its peripheral edge with an integral turned-over portion or roll forming a hollow tubular flange or tire extending around, and offset to one side of the edge of the plate in combination with a guiding string loosely connected with the plate centrally thereof and fragments of hard material placed within the hollow, tubular flange 01' tire.
2. A rolling toy consisting of a dished plate of circular form, made of sheet metal and provided at its peripheral edge with an integral turned-over portion or roll forming a hollow tubular flange or tire extending around, and offset to one side of the edge of the plate; said plate being provided with a central aperture surrounded by a depression or pocket formed in the convex side of the plate; in combination with a guiding string extending through the aperture and havin an obstruction seated in the pocket; and fragments of hard material placed loosely within the hollow tubular flange or tire.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
