Description
I. MAISANO.
TOY.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 26, 1920.
1,360,659. Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT' OFFICE.
IGNATIUS MAISANO, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
TOY.
Application filed February 26, 1920. Serial No. 361,567.
To all whom. it may concern 7 Be it known that I, IGNATIUS MAIsANo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy for the amusement of children, and more particularly to one of the mechanical order, it including a base carrying a figure of a galloping horseman which is given rising and falling movement by the turning of a crank by the user of the toy, there being connected to the operating shaft at the end opposite to that having the crank thereat, a supplemental crank by the turning of which motion is imparted to a jointed figure loosely attached thereto. A musical box or device may be inclosed within the base, pleasing sounds being produced through the medium of mechanism associated with that employed in giving motion to the figures.
My invention provides a mechanical toy which shall include but few parts if simple and inexpensive construction, and which by the motion of the figures carried thereby shall be attractive and amusing, and when combined with a musical instrument pleasing to the car.
With such objects in view the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, and Fig. 3 an additional view of the supplemental figure given motion by the user when actuating the main crank.
10 indicates a base preferably made of sheet metal in the form of a cylindrical box having an outwardly extending .bottomflange 11 and a top or cover 12. Projecting upwardly from the center of the cover 12, and fixed thereto, is apost 13 on which is rotatably mounteda disk 14 parallel to said cover and slightly raised above the latter by a collar 15 on the post 13. On the upper face of the disk 14 is an annular track 16 concentric with the disk 14 and having an undulating upper face formed of elevations 17'and depressions 18. The track may be separate from the disk 14 or integral therewith, and for facility and cheapness of manufacture may, if desired, be pressed up from the material entering into said disk.
Around the edges of the disk 14 is a circular series of perforations 19 with which engages a spur gear 20 by the rotation of which the disk 14 and track 16 are revolved. The spur gear 20 is fixed on a horizontal shaft 21 extending through and projecting from opposite sides of the base 10, the projectlng ends of said shaft being bent to form cranks 22 and 23. In proximity to the crank 23 is a jointed figure 24 comprising legs pivoted to the body 25, the latter having pivoted arms 26 which loosely en gage the crank 23. When the crank 22 is turned by the operator the crank 23 gives rocking movement to the figure 24.
Pivoted at 9 on the upper end of the fixed post 13 is the combined figure of a horse and horseman 27 adapted to rock vertically. One of the hind legs of the horse is provided with a roller 28 which by ravity bears continually on the track, anc when the disk is rotated the undulating face of the track 16, by contact with said roller, causes the horse to rock on its pivot 9, thus causing the combined figure to simulate a galloping horse with its rider.
hen the user turns the crank 22 the opposite crank 23 gives a compound motion to the figure 24, conveying to the mind of the child that said figure is cooperating with it in the use of the toy.
To increase the attractiveness of the toy, a musical box 30 is or may be placed within the base 10 and operated by means of a gear wheel 31 on the shaft 21, said gear engaging a gear wheel 32 on the drum shaft 33 of the musical box. Thus when the shaft 21 is turned to actuate the figures 27 and 24 the musical instrument will play in time to the motion of said figures.
I claim 1. A mechanical toy, comprising a cylindrical base or box, a rotatable disk above said box and parallel with its top, said disk being provided near its edge with a series of perforations, a shaft extending through said base, a main and a supplemental crank at the respective ends of said shaft, a gear 7 at one end of said shaft engaging with the perforations in said disk for rotating the latter, a jointed figure mounted on the base and pivotally connected to and moved by the rotation of the supplemental crank, a rocking non-rotatable figure above said disk.
an annular undulating track rotating with said disk, and a roller attached tosaid rocking non-rotatable figure acting by gravity upon said undulating track whereby move-LY ment may be given said figure When the main crankis turned.
2. A" mechanical toy, comprising a cylindrical base or box, a rotatable disk above said box and parallel With its top, said disk being provided near its edge with a'seri'es" of perforations, a shaft extending through said base, a main and a supplemental crank at the-respective ends of said shaft, a gear at one end of said shaft engagingthe perforations in said diskior rotating the latter, a jointed figuremounted on the base'and pivotally-connected to and moved by the rotation'of the supplemental crank, a rocking non-rotatable figure above sald disk, an
annular undulating track rotating with said disk, a roller attached to said rocking nonrotatable figure and resting by gravity upon said undulating track whereby movement may be given said figure When the main crank is turn'ed;'a musical device Within the base, and means for providing sounds in time With the movements of said figures.
In testimonywhere0f I my signature in presence-of two witnesses.
