JAMES H. BOlVEN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,590, dated June '7, 1881.
Application filed February 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, JAMES H.BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the toy embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section .in line 00 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of a toy having the following characteristics: a figure of a bird, animal, 850., wagging its tail and moving its head or mouth in imitation of singing, barking, &c., and means for producing sound in imitation of that of the bird, animal, &c., which the figure represents, synchronous with the motions of the tail and head or mouth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a frame, which may be mounted on a stand, a, or wheels I).
B represents a horizontally-arranged shaft, which is mounted on the frame and provided with a crank-handle, c, or made of the form of an axle connected to the wheels b,so that should the toy be supported on the standa the handlec provides means for rotating the shaft, or, when the toy is supported on the wheels and drawn along, the axle is rotated. Connected to the shaft is a bevel-wheel, d, which meshes with a bevelwheel, 6, on the lower end of a vertical shaft, 0, which is passed through the upright portion A of the frame A, and properly mounted, and has its upper end project into the body of a figure, D, which latter is supported on the portion A, and is in the present case of the form of a bird, although that of an animal or other objectmaybeemployed. Thefigurehasamovable bill, f, and tail g, which are pivoted. to the body, so that the former may open and close and the latter wag in imitation of similar motions of the live bird or object. The bill is formed with an extension, f, and the tail with an extension, 9, both extensions projecting inwardly so that they face each other, whereby they may be engaged by a cam, E, on the upper end of the shaft 0, said cam being cylindrical in cross section, and its upper edge winged, scalloped, or formed with several elevations and depressions, the extensionf of the billrestin g against said upper edge of the cam. The lower edge of the cam has one or more elevations, against which rests the extension 9 of the tail. The. shaft G passes through a sound-producing device, F, located within the portion A of the frame, and consisting of a coiled or rubber spring, it, one end of which is connected to the shaft C and the other end bears against a wooden sleeve or disk, k, which is fitted loosely on the shaft 0, and encircles or is in contact with ablock or piece, m, of metal, which is fixed to the portion A of the frame, and has the shaft 0 passed loosely through it, the spring h encircling said shaft.
If desired, the sleeve k maybe made of metal and the block or piece at of wood, the object in either case being to cause, by the rotation of the sleeve 70, a creaking sound which imitates to some extent the singing or warbling of a bird, croakin g of afrog, grunting of apig, barking of a dog, or other noises of animal or other objects relatively to the pressure of the wood on the metal, or vice versa, due to the spring 71. and the regularity and irregularity of the rotation of the sleeve; for as the sleeve is rotated by the action of the springh, connected to the rotary shaft 0, and said spring, owing to the friction of the sleeve 7c and block m, is caused at times to dwell, then gains power and abruptly starts, and again suddenly stops, a variety of noise or sound is occasioned by the device F.
In the drawings I show three birds or figures; but in carrying out my invention I may use one or all of the figures at pleasure. 1n the right and left hand figures the cam E is placed on the horizontal shaft B, and the inner exten= sion, g, of the tail bears against the inner extension, f, of the bill, and has a depending arm, g, which is engaged by said cam E.
If desired, the entire head of the figure D may be hinged to the body thereof, instead of having the hinged bill or month, without departing from my invention.
It will be seen that the operation of the shaft B rotates the cam E and the sleeve or disk 7c of the sounding device, whereby the figure moves its bill, mouth, head, &c., and wags its tail, the sound of whistling or warbling, 8m,
LII
impart motion to the mouth and tail of the figure, as stated.
2. A sound-producing device and a figure with a movable mouth and tail, in combina tion with a rotary shaft or axle operating both said device and the means which move the mouth and tail of the figure, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Vitnesses: J. H. BOWEN.
