DOLL.
Application filed January 9, 1924. Serlial No. 685,138.
This invention relates to toys, and such novelties, and While I will in this application illustrate and describe its specific embodiment. in a toy doll, it is to be understood that the principles may be embodied in toys and novelties in various different figures or images. Further, I resurve the right to alter the design of the image in various particulars,
so the specific design of the image herein shown and described is not to be construed as a limitation upon the invention.
Specifically, my invention embraces the arrangement of a portion of an image, such as the head, upon a rotatable and longitudinally movable shaft, so this portion may be raised and turned simultaneous to the body portion of the image, giving it somewhat the appearance of an animated object.
The specific construction, arrangement and operation of my embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front View of a doll in which my improvement is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a central vertical section therethrough. taken as indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings the numeral 10 designates the body portion of the doll or image, 11 a body supporting portion made to repre sent the limbs and 12 a base upon which the figure is supported so it will stand up. This figure may be made of any suitable material, preferably wood.
A central bore 13 extends longitudinally through the portions 10 and 11, being closed at its bottom end by the base 12 which may be secured thereto in any suitable manner. A shaft 14 is loosely mounted in the bore 13 to be both rotatably and longitudinally movable therein, upon the upper end of which the head 15 is rigidly secured. The shaft 14 isot' such length that when the head 15 is in its normal central position, with its bottom side 4 the body 10, the lower end 17 thereof will rest upon the top face of the base 12. The shaft 14 and head 15 may also be made of any suitable material, but these will also be preferably made of wood.
resting upon or adjacent the top face 16 of i A pin 18 extends through an arcuate cam slot 19, cut in the bottom portion 11 of the figure, and is driven into or secured to the shaft 14. This pin extends far. enough beyond the outer face of the portion 11 so that it may be moved from side to side by the finger. Moving the pin 18 from side to side, as in Fig. 2, the shaft 14 and head 15 will be partially rotated and at the same time will be raised by engagement of the pin in the cam slot 19, as illustratedin dottedlines. This function gives an amusing appearance to the image by causing the head 15 to be raised relative to the body portion 10, While at the same time it is moved from side to side.
This arrangement not only provides a novel and amusing toy, but it may be made very strong and durable and not easily broken which is an added feature of the structure.
Having described my invention. I claim:
1. A toy doll comprising a body portion,
a bore in said body portion, a shaft mounted to be rotated and moved longitudinally in said bore, a head mounted on the shaft, an arcuate cam slot extending through said body portion and communicating with said bore, and a pinextending through said slot and into the shaft, whereby movement of the pin in the slot will effect rotation and longitudinal movement of the shaft and headthereon.
2.'A toy doll, comprising a body port-ion, a bore longitudinally of thebody portion, a
shaft mounted normally freely rotatable in the bore, ahead secured to the upper end of the shaft and adapted to normally rest ad jacent the upper end of-thebody portion, a cam surface in connection with the body portion, inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of the body portion, and means in connection with the shaft, adapted to engage said cam surface,'whereby the shaft and head thereon will be moved longitut'linally of the body portion upon relative rotation of the two.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I' have hereunto subscribed my name this 1st day ofDece-mber 1923.
RUSSELL, oLErsoN.
