TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1920.
Application led yMarch 20, 1920. Serial No. 367,399.
To all ltlf/'tom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, HENRY C. BARGER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented cer-V tain new and useful Improvements in Toys,
y I provide a vehicle having wheels, a body on the vehicle having a pivoted head and pivoted arms and a slidable member guided within the body to be moved by one of the wheels, said head being tilted by said member when the latter moves in one direction, and the arms being operatively connected with said members to be rocked when said member reciprocates.
My invention also comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved toy, partly in section and part of the garment of the body being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2, 2 in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail.
The numeral 1 indicates a vehicle, shown resembling a sled, having a base board 2 from which depends spaced side walls 3 between which wheels 4, 5 are pivoted. The rear wheels 5 are shown spaced apart and provided with pivots 6 carried by walls 2, a crank-pin 7 being secured to wheels 5 in an eccentric position therebetween. Upon base 1 are sides 8 and a back board 9 to resemble the seat portion of a sled.
A toy body or figure is indicated at 10 seated upon base 3 between the sides 8 and back 9 to which the body may be attached by screws. The body or figure may be of an animal, a particular feature being to represent it in the characteristic of Santa Claus, the coat being shown at 11. Said body may be made of wood or other suitable material, the same being shown provided with a trunk pbrtion 12, a head 13 the neck portion 13,` of which is pivoted forwardly at 14 to theA trunk, at one side of the vertical center of the head, and arms 15, 16. The arm 15 is shown pivoted to the trunk 12 at 17 to eX- tend forwardly, and the arm 16 is shown pivoted to the trunk at 18 to extend outwardly laterally of the body. The interior of the body is provided with a vertical guideway 12et which opens through base 2 and 2a and reciprocative within said guideway is a slide member 19 provided with a depending extension 2O passing freely through opening 2@L and provided with a curved lower face 20SL over and coperative with crank-pin 7. The extension 2O is shown pivotally connected to member 19 to swing as required when engaged by crankpin 7. The upper end of member 19 op poses the neck portion of head 13, and since the latter is pivoted forwardly at 14 the tendency of the head will be to tilt backwardly. The neck is shown provided with side lugs 13", to oppose slide member 19and with a rearward projection 13c over a shoulder or stop 13b, on the trunk 12. `The arm 15 is provided with a pin or projection 21 operative in an opening 22 in the trunk of body 10 and shown entering a hole 23 in slide member 19, whereby as the latter is reciprocated the arm 15 will be rocked. The inner pivotal portion of arm 16 rocks in an opening 24 in the trunk of body 10 and the inner end of said arm is located in an opening 25 in slide member 19, whereby as the latter is reciprocated the arm 16 will rock.
When the toy vehicle is moved along the floor'its wheels will revolve and the crank pin 7, operating against the base 20a, will raise the slide member 19, which will push on the lugs 13b of neck 13a and cause the head 13 to tilt forwardly, the slide member 19 at the same time raising projection 25 and the inner end of arm 16, thereby causing said arms to rock downwardly, as indicated by the dotted positions of the head and arms in Figs. 1 and 2. `When the crank pin descends from the high position the slide member will descend (by gravity) thus releasing the head and permitting the same to tilt backwardly, the "descent of the slide member causing the arms 15, 16 to rock upwardly. The continued rotation of crankpin 7 will cause rocking of the head and arms while the toy is propelled forwardly or backwardly, Since the surface 20a is curved over crank-pin 7 the latter can operand cheap to manufacture, requiring nol gears or springs for operation of the parts, and will be pleasing and amusing for children. The toy may be made almost entirely of wood so as not to injure the children playing with it. lf prefered, only one of the arms need be connected to member 19 for rocking it. Y
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A toy comprising a vehicle having wheels, a body mounted thereon, a headpivotally supported at the forward side of its vertical center to tilt rearwardly7 relatively to the body, a slide member mounted within the body independent of the head in position to engage and` tilt the head when moving in one direction, the head being adapted to automatically return when the member moves reversely, and means to actuate said member by one of the wheels.
2. A toy comprising a vehicle having wheels, a body mounted thereon, a head pivotally supported on the body to tilt, an arm pivotally carried by the body, a slide member mounted within the body separate from the head in position to engage and'tilt the head when moving in one direction andoperatively connected with the arm to rock the same, and a crank-pin connected with one of said wheels to actuate said slide member.
3. A. toy comprising a vehicle having wheels, a body mounted thereon and provided with a head pivotally supported on the body to tilt, an arm pivotally carried by the body, a slide member mounted within the body separate from the head in position to engage the head at one side of its pivot to tilt the head and operatively connected with the arm to rock the same, and a crank-pin connected with one of said wheels, said slide member having a pivoted extension provided with a curved surface over the crank-pinto be engaged by the latter to actuate the slide member. y
L1. A toy comprising a. vehicle having wheels, a body mounted thereon and provided with a head and an arm pivotally carried by the body, a slide member mounted within the body in position to engage and tilt the head, said slide member having an opening, the inner end of said arm being located in said opening for operation ofy the arm, and means to actuate said member by one of said wheels.
5. A. toy comprising a vehicle having wheels, a body mounted thereon and provided with a head, said head being pivoted on the body at one side of the vertical center of the head, an arm pivotally carried by the body, said body having a vertical guideway below the head, a slide member in said guideway independent of the head in position to Aengage and tilt the head, said arm being operatively connected with said slide member to rock the arm, and means to actu ate said member by one of said wheels.
G. A toy. comprising a vehicle having wheels, a body mounted thereon and provided with a head, said head being pivoted on the body at one side of the vertical center of the head, an arm pivotally carried by the body, said body having a vertical guideway below the head, a slide member in said guideway in position to engage and tilt the head, said arm being voperatively connected with said slide member to rock'the same, and a crank-pin connected with one of said wheels to actuate the slide member.
'7. A toy comprising` a vehicle having wheels, a body mounted thereon and provided with a head and an arm, said head being pivoted on the body at one Vside of the vertical center of the head, said arm being pivotally carried by the body, said body having a vertical guideway below the head, a slide member in said guideway in position to engage the head at one side of the head to tilt the head, said arm being operatively connected with said slidemember to rock the arm, and a crank pin-connected with one of said wheels, said slide member being provided with a curved surface over said crank-pin to be engaged thereby to actuate said member.
S. A 'toy comprising a vehicle having wheels, a body mounted thereon vand provided with a head and an arm pivotally carried by the body, a slidemember mounted within the body in position to engage and tilt the head and operatively connected with the arm to rock the same, said member having a depending extension pivotally connected therewith, anda crank-pin connected with one of said wheels to operate said eX- tension and slide.
Signed at New York in the' county of New York and State of New York this 19th day of March, A. D. 1920. Y
