Description
K. B, FULD.
FIGURE WHEELED TOY.
APPLICATION man JAN. 11. 1921.
PatentedNov, 29, 1921,
KATHERINE B. FULD, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM FULD, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Application filed January 11, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHERINE B. FULD, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figure W'heeled Toys, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to toys and has for an object the provision of a wheeled toy of simple construction which shall have an amusing movement.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a toy which with a very simple operating mechanism may provide movement of a plurality of figures.
A further object is the provision of a toy which is cheap to manufacture and is not likely to get out of order.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters refer to like parts, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation wlthparts broken away and in section to more clearly show the mechanism and with a different position of the parts shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a plan view with a portion of each of two elements broken away to more clearly show the construction of parts.
Fig. 3 is a detail section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing the structure of front axle mounting.
The base 5 of the toy is mounted on the front wheels 6 and the rear wheels 7. For attachment of the wheels to the base, blocks 8 for the front wheels and blocks 9 for the rear wheels are secured to the base 5 as by glue or nails. The rear wheels 7 maybe pivotally secured to the blocks 9 by driving a nail or a screw through a hole in the center of each wheel into the adjacent block.
The front wheels 6 are mounted on the ends of the axle 10 in such a manner that the axle will be caused to revolve with the wheels. This may be accomplished by squaring the axle or by a tight fit or in any other well known manner. For convenient assembly of the axle with the wheels already secured thereto the blocks 8 may be formed with a slot as 11, Fig. 3, and the axle may be retained therein by driving a nail 12 into the end of the block intersecting the slot 11 below the axle.
To drive the moving parts of the toy a Specification of Letters Patent:
Patented Nov. 29, 192-1.
Serial No. 436,419.
The main figure, in the form chosen for purposes of illustration made to represent a goat, is rigidly secured to the base 5 as by nails 15 and has the head 16 pivotally mounted on the body 17. To this end a slot 18 is produced in the proper location on the body 17 and the neck 19 has a reduced portion 20 adapted to enter the slot after which a pin 21 is passed through the body and reduced portion of the neck. The head is thus oscillatably mounted upon the body.
To cause movements of oscillation of the head the connecting rod 1 1 may be connected to the nose 22 aS by means of a staple or screw eye 23.
A second figure 2 1, being shown in the form of a monkey for purposes of illustration, is oscillatably mounted on the back of the first figure 17 as by being slotted at 25 to provide two projecting portions 26 one of which may pass on each side of the body 17, and which are then pivotally secured thereto as by a pin 27 passed through the overlapping parts.
To cause motion of the figure 24: without any added driving mechanism connected to the wheels of the toy, a portion of the moving portion of the first or main figure is utilized as a cam. In the form shown the horn 28 is so formed that the figure 24L rests on the rounded cam surface of the horn by gravity, the nose 29 of the figure 2 1 being allowed to contact with the horn.
The fore legs 30 of the figure 2% may be positioned to contact the back of the figure 17 at the lowest point of oscillation of the parts, and when so formed gives an added security against breakage of the portion 28 bearing the cam'surface, in the event, for instance, of a child sitting on the figure 2 1. An attachment for a cord by which to draw the toy may be provided, a hole 31 being shown for the purpose.
lVhen the toy is drawn the crank 13 will cause an oscillation of the head 16 giving an appearance of a nodding motion which motion will be transmitted to the figure 24.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention without departing from its spirit.
I claim:
1 A toy comprising, in combination, a
Wheel-equipped platform, a figure having a body portion, an oscillating member plvotally connected to said body portion and having a cam surface thereon, means connecting the Wheel members and said oscillating member to actuate the latter in the movement of the former, and a second figure pivoted to the body portion of said first figure and having its free forward end resting on the cam surface of said oscillating member to be rocked by the movements thereof.
2. A toy comprising, in combination, a base, an axle mounted on said base having a In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
