CHARLES A. KNIGHT, OF NICHOLASVILLE, KENTUCKY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24, 1911.
Application filed August 9, 1910. Serial No. 576,275.
' able device on which is mounted one or more movable figures which are moved when the toy is propelled.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views:-Figu re 1 is a perspective view of my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a 1on gitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The toy is preferably of a portable structure and in design it is intended to represent a circus wagon. 1 is the platform of the wagon and 2 the body thereof. A wheeled axle 3 is located at the front of the platform and a similaraxle 4k is located near the rear thereof. A figure 5 representing a clown has its lower portion 6 secured in a suitable well known manner to the seat 7. The upper body portion 8 of the figure is pivoted to the lower portion so that such parts are relatively movable. The figure is provided with movably mounted arms 9.
The platform 1 is extended beyond the forward end of the body 2 to form what in appearance presents a tread surface or sup port 10 for the animal-like object 11. The object 11 in the present instance represents a horse. Its head 12 has its neck portion pivotally supported to the body 13 by the pivot pin 14, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The tail 15 is pivoted to the back of the horse, as shown at 16, and it is pivoted to the upper end ofa connecting link 17 which connects the tail with the connecting rod 18 of the hind legs 19. The legs 19 are pivoted to the body 13, as clearly illustrated. The front legs 20 are pivoted to the body 13 and they are connected with each other by the rod 21. This rod is connected with the rod 18 by a member 22 which is constructed so that on rocking movement of the hind legs of the animal a corresponding movement will be imparted to the front legs.
The neck 12 is pivotally connected with the rod 21 by a link 23. Rein lines 24 connect the head 12 with the movable arms 9 of the figure The axle l is provided with a crank portion 25 which is connected by the link 26 with the rock arm 27. This rock arm is mounted on the body 2 of the wagon and at its upper end it is pivoted to the link 28 between the ends thereof. The forward end of the link pivoted to the movable upper body portion 8 of the figure The rear end of the link is pivoted to the arm 29 of a bell crank lever. This lever is pivoted to the body 2 and the arm 30 thereof is connected with one end of a light spring 31. A jointed figure 32 is suspended from the spring 31 so that on movement of the bell crank lever dance-like movements will be imparted to the figure 32. The platform 1 is formed to provide a rear extension 33 which is disposed immediately beneath the feet of the figure32.
A rock arm 3st is mounted on the extension 10 and it extends upwardly through a slot 35 therein. Its upper end is connected with the rod 36 by a link 37. The rod 36 connects the legs 19 of the animal, as shown. The lower end of the rock arm 31 is connected with the lower end of the rock arm 27 by the rod 38. The body of the wagon is provided with spring-like supporting elements 39 which extend forwardly as shown, and at the sides of the body 13 of the figure 11. These elements represent the shafts of the vehicle and they are secured to the body 13 by fastening devices 40.
From the construction of the toy described and shown herein, it will be seen that an extremely amusing article is pro duced. In operation, the wagon-like structure is propelled manually and on movement thereof motion will be transmitted to the rock arms. 27 and 3 -1 to transmit simultaneously movements to the figures 5, 32 and 11. The movements transmitted as described, will be such that the figure 32 will dance, the animal or figure 11 will prance and the figure 5 will be moved to represent a realistic driving motion.
1. A toy comprising a portable platform, a figure mounted thereon for dance-like movements, a figure of animal form having jointed portions, a third figure mounted between the first and second named figures and having a jointed portion, connections =between the jointed portion of the third a figure of animal form supported by the platform and provided with jointed legs and with a jointed head, a second figure having a jointed body portion and jointed arms, connections between the jointed arms of the second figure and the head of the first figure, a third figure mounted for dance-like movements on the platform, and operative connections between the legs of the first figure and between the movable second and third named figures for moving the figures simultaneously when the platform is propelled.
3. A toy comprising a portable platform, a rock member, a figure yieldingly supported by the rock member and having jointed portions so that on movement of the rock member dance-like movements will be imparted to thefigure, a figure of animal form having jointed portions, means for supporting the figure on the platform, a third jointed figure movably connected With the second named figure, and means for sinmlt-aneously moving the figures when the platform is propelled.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
