Description

ANIMAL-LIKE PULL TOY Fi led May 7, 19:51
A TTORNEY Patented Mar. 15, 1932 Hairs 'rrss AGNES PARTON, or are, new rear ANIMAL-LIKE PULL JII'OY Application filed May 7, 1931; Serial No. 535,582,
This invention relates to walking toys generally and more particularly to toys in simulation of certain species of animals.
One object of the invention is to produce a toy of the character referred to that will effectively simulate the natural movements of certain animals while walking or creep,
rit further object of the invention is to pro- 16 duce a toy of this nature provided with a shell or body portion and a head and neck portion that will move inwardly and outwardly of the said shell when the toy is drawn along the ground.
Another object is to produce a device of the character described in which the maximum simplicity of construction and operation is secured.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting substantially in the novel arrangementand co-relation of parts herein fully described, and illust-rated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein similar reference characters are used to describe corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then finally pointed out and specifically defined and indicated in the appended claim.
The disclosure exemplifying the present inventive concept suggests a practical embodiment thereof,v but the invention is not to be restricted to the exact details of this disclosure, and the latter, therefore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive standpoint.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustration, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through one form of my toy;
Figure 2 is a sectional view thereof on line 22 Fig. 1 with parts shown in elevation;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the toy;
Figure 4 is a similar view to Figure 1 showing the head being extended outside of the shell; and
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified form of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates the shell or body portion of my improved toy which in Figs. 1 to 4 is illustrated as being in the form of a turtle. Rotatably mounted in the frame 10 is a shaftl l to which is secured a pair of eccentrically mounted wheels 15, the said shaft having a central crank portion 12 which suitably supports one end of a member 13 terminating at its free end in a head portion 14:.
Legs 16 are loosely mounted on pins 17 passing through the body 10, the said legs 16 also fitting loosely in cutouts 18 on the under portion of the shell or body.
As the toy is drawn along the ground by 05 means of a pull cord 20 the wheels will be rotated in the directions of the arrows (see Figs. 1 and l) which rotation will be imparted to the shaft 11 and force the head carrying member 13 to first move outwardly of 7 the shell and then be retracted inwardly. Simultaneous with the said forward and backward movement the head carrying member will also be made to rock up and down due to the arcuate ground engaging surface 21 of the said member 13.
Due to the manner of mounting the wheels on the shaft the body portion 10 will be made to go up and down while it is being propelled along the ground and permitting the legs 16 to swing up and down on their pivot pins 17, this swinging of the legs, up and down movement of the body and rocking of the head, will give the toy a natural walking appearance during its propulsion. 35
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modified form of my invention, in which I have illustrated my toy in the form of a snail whose body or shell 25 has rotatably mounted therein a shaft 26 to which is secured one or more ground en- 90 gaging wheels 27 which may be eccentrically or concentrically mounted. A pin 28 may pass through the said wheels and have suitably mounted thereon a head carrying member 29 which is provided at its underside with an arcuate surface 30 to rock the said head carrying member when the toy is propelled.
In this modified form of my invention as well as in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4 the toy will when drawn along the ground, efi'ectively simulate all the natural movements of the animal Which the particular toy represents.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I 5 have provided an animal like Walking toy which will give pleasure and amusement to children and teach them the natural move ments of such animals when Walking.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A toy of the nature described, comprising a body, legs loosely mounted on the said body and adapted for up and down movement, a crank shaft rotatably mounted on the said body, a ground engaging Wheel fast on the shaft and eccentrically mounted thereon, and a member on the crank portion of the shaft simulating a portion of the body. .go AGNES PARTON.
