it known that I, J OZEPH A. GAZDA, a citizen of Poland, residing at Chicopee, in the county of Hampden and. State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figure V7 heeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanical toys, and has: particular reference to that type of toy adapted to be pulled or pushed along a sidewalk or the like, to afford amusement for children. 1
An important object of the invention is to construct a. toy of theabove mentioned character that is provided with means for imparting motion to objects carried by the device. A further object of the invention resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts which will be later set forth and which gives to the device simplicity, efficiency, and durability.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the toy embodying the invention,

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the rear portion of the toy.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a cart, or the like, having a bottom or floor 6, sides 7, front end board 8, and rear end board 9. Secured to the under face of the bottom 6 are reinforcing bars 10 that extend longitudinally of the cart at its under side edges. lhese side bars are provided with bearings 11 for receiving the front axles 12 and rear axles 13 as shown.
The front axle 12 is provided with a crank portion 1 1, as best shown in 3, for having secured thereto, as by the strap 15, a crank rod 16 that is adapted to extend upwardly through the opening 17 formedin the bottom 6 and the longitudinally extending slot 18 provided in the platform 19 positioned at the forward end of Figures 2 andv the cart. i Passing through thecrank rod 16 and extending laterally therefrom is a handle bar 20. aecured to the bottom 6 at a point rearwardly of the platform 19 are a pair of men dolls '21 that are adapted to grasp the handle bar 20 as shown. It will be apparent, with the front wheels 22 splined to the axle, that when the cart is moved over the ground the-crank portion 1 1 will cause thecrank rod 16 to reciprocate through I the opening 17 and slot 18 thus causing the dolls 21 to bend at their waist-line, giving them the appearance of propelling the cart by their action.
Referring more particularly to Figures 3 and a, there is shown a centrally positioned longitudinally extending opening 23 and laterally positioned parallel slots 2 1 formed in the bottom 6. The rear axle-13 has secured thereto a pulley wheel 25 that alines with the opening 23 and projects upwardly there. through, the axle is further provided with vertically extending cam portions 26 that are in alinement with the slots 2 1- and pass therethrough during a portion of their circular movement with the said axle. Positioned within the cart and adjacent the rear end board 9, there is formed a seat 27 that is adapted to support the dolls 28 in a sit ting position as shown. Journaled in the seat 27 are perpendicular shafts 29 that extend upwardly through the bodies of the dolls 28 and downwardly through the apertures 30 formed in the bottom 6, to terminate at a point below the rear axle 13. Secured to the upper ends of the shafts 29 are the heads 31 of the dolls 28, the said shafts are further provided with laterally extending arms 32 that are positioned on a horizontal plane with the rear axle 13. Secured to the shafts 29, as by the eye-bolts 33, are spiral springs 34. that extend forwardly to be secured to the bottom 6 by the eye-bolts It will be apparent, with the rear wheels 36 rigidly secured to the rear axle 13, that forward movement of the cart will cause the cam portions 26 to engage the arms 32 during a portion of their circular movement to cause the shafts 29 to rotate, thus turning the doll heads 31 approximately a quarter of a turn. After the cams: 26 have passed the arms 32, the springs 3 1 will return the shafts 29 to their normal position with the arms 32 extending transversely of the rear portion of the slots 24:. It will be apparent that this action will cause the doll heads 31 to turn upon the upper ends of their bodies once during every complete revolution of the rear wheels 36.
Positioned within the cart is a platform 37 having journaled therein the upper end of a perpendicular shaft 38 that is supported at its lower end by a transversely extending frame or support 39. The perpendicular shaft 38 is further provided with a pulley wheel 40 thatis positioned between the platform 37 and the frame or support 39, while at its upper end is secured a disk 41 that is adapted to support the dancing couple '42 secured thereto. A flexible connection 43 is passed around the pulley wheel 25 carried by the rear axle 13 and the pulley 40 carried by the perpendicular shaft 38 to frictionally engage the same for causing the dancing couple to revolve when the cart is moved along the ground. The frame or support 39 is further provided with a guide wheel 44 for preventing the flexible connection 43 from becoming disengaged with the pulley wheels 25 and 40.
From the above detailed description, it is believed that the construction and operation of the various parts of this invention will at once be apparent, therefore, no further explanation is deemed necessary.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope'of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim: a
In a device of the character described, a cart having axles journaled thereto, wheels secured to said axles, objects positioned near the forward end of said cart, acrank portion carried by the front'axle, a connection between said crank portion and objects for imparting motion to the said objects, a shaft positioned centrally of said cart, a pulley wheel secured to said shaft, objects carried by said shaft, a pulley wheel carried by the rear axle, a connection between said pulley wheels for imparting motion from the rear axle to the second mentioned objects, perpendicular shafts positioned in the rearward portion of said cart, doll heads carried by the upper end of said shafts, laterally extending arms carried by the lower ends of said shafts, resilient connections; between said shafts andsaid cartfor retaining the said heads in their normal position, and cams carried by the rear axle for engaging said arms to cause a partial rotation of said heads.
